I came across a used (it's a consignment sale) S&W CS40 (with just one mag and no box) at a LGS. It's the version with the SS slide and the black frame, black trigger, black hammer and controls, and the Hogue rubber grip panels. Price: $375.

I went over it pretty well. It's in very good condition, no holster wear at all, either on the slide or frame, no scratches/dings/bright spots anywhere, the Novak sights look new, the rubber grips look fresh. I wasn't able to field strip it, but the interior looks new, feed ramp is shiny, the barrel and guiderod were free of scratches and the plastic mag follower (it was white in color?) and magazine tube look new. All in all it looks like a gun that was purchased by a private party, shot a few times and kept in the closet.

What really impressed me was the DA/SA trigger feel and pull...extremely smooth, light and crisp, not at all like some of the larger, well-used 3rd Gen S&W pistols I've handled, what with their long, slightly gritty and crunchy triggers. The grip fit my hand better than any micro/compact has a right to. It's slightly smaller yet thicker than my 3913, but the decocker/safety levers seem smaller and don't stick out as far.

I'm not really looking for a .40, were it a .45 ACP or a 9mm I would have purchased it, but I'm thinking a small .40 might be better as a CCW. I'm wondering if this is a good buy for these pistols, and how the values for S&W Chief's Specials in the various calibers are trending these days.

Prices seem to be all over the place for the CS pistols, anywhere from $350-800. SS usually seems to command a higher price. I personally like the bi-tone look and don't think that it would impact value. The CS40 didn't seem to enjoy the same level of popularity as the CS9 or CS45 but at that price I'd sure buy it if I needed another. I have the entire CS line and like them all very much. Size/dimension-wise, the 40 is almost exactly the same size as the 45, both being somewhat larger in all dimensions than the 9. Any of them IMO are very easily concealable and all are (again, IMO) utterly reliable. Sounds like you've found one not only in very nice condition but with an exceptional trigger, at a very good price. I've never felt the .40 to be an underpowered round. Some feel the CS40 is snappy; I find it to be very controllable. If it feels good in your hand, maybe its trying to send you a message. You can be pretty confident that if you bought it and DIDN'T like it, you'd have no trouble selling it for more than you paid. Good luck.

I just paid more than that for a CS45 and I don't feel like I lost out in the deal. I'm still waiting on my Big Dog grip (nudge, nudge, BG... ;)) and I can't wait for it. I would snap that up if you even have two thoughts to rub together and make a spark of wisdom. Heck, if it turns out you hate it I bet you can turn a coin on it.

I have a Three word response......BUY IT NOW.The CS 40 was the first to be discontinued and is becoming the hardest to find.AS I have said before,The Houge grips are the biggest fault of this gun as they force the gun to print out when in CC mode. You need Big Dog's Grips to put on the ones that should have been OEM to begin with.I added Trijicon Night Sights on my CS9 to make a good carry gun perfect.....All the best....Mike

I bought one used on Gunbroker, stainless DAO model, 92%
Gave $306 for the gun with one mag, no box, $29 freight.
Looks like new and is a great shooter, the only DAO model I've ever seen.

GB has 5 right now. It appears to me that they are alot easier to find than the cs9 and cs45. My lgs has 3, ranging in (asking) price from $400 to $450. Over the last 60 days on GB, 3 have sold- $311 w/ one mag, $326 w/ one mag and $425 w/ 2 mags..
In excellent condition with 2 mags and box, I'd probably pay $400.
If in excellent condition with only 1 mag, best I'd do w/b $350.

Thank you all for the great information, gentlemen. This site is a great resource. I've decided to pass on this CS40. As stated, I wasn't really in the market for a .40 caliber, and there are a few other S&W pistols I've been trying to find.

Having recently rekindled my interest in S&W semi-autos, mostly after finding a very nice used 3913 to replace a 3914 I stupidly sold years ago (and hanging around this site far too often for my own good), I've been haunting nearby gun shops looking for good used examples of certain S&W pistols. These days there are a lot of very interesting ones out there for good prices. I'll post some pics after I find exactly what I'm looking for.
