Today I am doing a deal on a current model 648. I recently purchased a 48-2 with Target Everything. The 648 comes with rubber combat grips that I have no interest in. Does anyone have an opinion as to which supplier, Altmont or Handicraft Grips, would have grips that would be the closest match to the original Walnut Target on my 48-2?

Thanks, Bob

No experience with Handicraft, but the Altamont Targets I've handled just don't feel "correct", although not necessarily bad. They don't look quite right either. Again they are perfectly serviceable though.

Eagles are pretty good, and reasonably priced. I have a set of their repro Cokes on a pre 25-2.
Plus plenty of real used stuff on eBay, not to mention our own classified section.

I presume your new 648 has a round butt grip frame? If so several companies offer (or have offered) round to square butt conversion stocks that closely resemble the old style Target type.

Altamont may have some but to me the laminate construction doesn't look as nice as solid wood.

I would get the Altamont over the Handicraft. I have both and the Altamont is better. I have had Eagle in the past, very good quality. If your 648 is a square butt, find a set of originals or get some from the S&W store.

I recommend the Hogue Hardwood Monogrip wholeheartedly! Practically all my revolvers have them on all the time. Lots of wood choices, and fingergrooves or not. Not very expensive compared to S&W originals!

The below-linked outfit doesn't get much attention here, but they have some interesting offerings.

I’d steer clear of Altamont. Purchased a set of N-frame coke repros and the screw retainer fell right out of both grips and didn’t fit well on my 27-2.

I am very happy with these Hogues I put on my 648.
