Some guys are getting short hard tactical cases for their rifles w/foam that needs to be cut so the weapon is 'introduced' into the foam.

I bought an SKS hard case w/double foam.

When putting my weapon into it and just closing the case, it would be really tight and I thunk, this isn't right.

So, I removed the first 2" thick pad, drew an outline on the foam of my 15-T and started cutting thru it.

Alltho I was using an extremely sharp knife, I was getting 'push/pull' ridges around the cut.

I had wonst worked on 'Anechoic Chambers' that were filled with foam to deaden sound and to cut the foam and shape it to the required fit, we'd use an 'Electric Carving Knife'.

My parent's had given me one 25/30 years ago and I found it and started using that for cutting and trimming out the ridges.

Bottom line: If you have some foam to cut and have access to an Electric Knife and take your time, the foam will end up looking like it came from the factory that way!!:D

I heard if you put your AR in the oven at 400 degrees for about an hour, then lay it in the foam and shut the case it will make a perfect impression of the gun on the foam.

Just kidding. Don't do that!!

But you can take a hot wire and cut foam like the pros do. ;)

Be sure the magazine is fully loaded before you put it in the oven.

Take the foam out, position the rifle where you want it,outline with a magic marker, cut on the INSIDE of the lines with a electric knife. When you put the rifle back inside the foam will overlap a little for a firm fit.Keep the piece you cut out to replace in the case when not in use. This keeps the foam in place and does not cause a wrinkle in the empty case foam.

I work at a company that makes foam. Mostly for bedding, but we also make some grey & fairly dense foam that sure looks like it's work well for gun cases.

They generate tons of scrap (as in 1200-1900lb bales of scrap they sell) so I should see if I could grab a little of the grey the next time they have some.

They use very sharp blades to cut it, both into large buns for some customers and smaller sizes for others.
