CZ has a bad habbit of covering some beautiful Turkish walnut with what the cz crowd calls "mud" and I dont know why they do that. Look what I found hiding under my "mud" covered stock. I knew it it was under there and it was driving me nuts so I stripped it and refinished it. No sandpaper was used in this ttansformation.

That seems to be a thing with manufacturers in that region. Zastava also has some beautiful wood that they booger up. Lots of transformation videos online……… congrats on a beautiful rifle. You did a great job.

That is a beautiful finish. What did you use?

Heritage Natural Finishes

While they do offer a "gunstock"kit (brought about at my and others Im sure) behest thats not what I used. Ive been using their products since about 2002 maybe and Ive never been disappointed with them, and I always use the same stuff. I bought a gallon of concentrated finishing oil with UVA and mildewside, a quarts of Citris solvent and a quart of Endgrain Sealer. From those 3 I can make their entire range of products, almost. Ive used it on furniture, wooden boats, patio furniture, sealing all of my choice boards endgrain etc. Indoor and outdoor stuff and it just works.
This company started under a different name, LandArk Oils in the PNW as a supplier to the huge timberframe homes industry out there so its essentially a finish and maintenance product for million $ homes, and theyve been supplying this stuff for a long time so Im guessing Im not the only one who thinks it works.
Yall should really get on their site and read around a bit, it might make you curious enough to try some and NO, I HAVE NO AFFILIATION WITH THEM AND RECEIVE NOTHING IF ANYONE DOES. I paid for everything I have from them, full freight.
I was going to try their gunstock kit since I bugged them for a long time to make one but with the economy being what it is I dont want to just waste money so I called and asked about it and was told that like everything they sell it too has the same ingredients just in different amounts, thats why you can blend your own. Their gunstock probably has a little more of their Tung and Linseed oils so that what I added, theirs.
They just have some amazing products that are definitely a big cut above anything I used before theirs, especially their Tung and Lindseed oils. Definitely not the same you get at big box joints.

Love nice wood, hope it shoots as good as the wood looks. Need a range report, Larry

After the refinish I was putting it back together and noticed my scope was not level so I checked the ring caps and they were tight zo I have no idea what happened, regardless I had to level it up so I loosened them and adjusted everything and torqued them back down. Set the action back in and torqued the action screws to the values I had used before. So basically I had the entire gun and scope loose but when I reassembled it and went to the range this was my first group. The one shot high left there was #1 so I made one set of adjustments to both windage and elevation and shot the rest, which is 14 rounds of super cheap Armscore jhp that this rifle loves, thankfully. Its cheap.
50yds

Just like it always shot.

I havent found its worst load yet. The TNT load is 40gr as are most others but Hornady makes a 30gr it shoots like those just a bit higher, Federal makes a 50gr GamePoint it shoots like that but a bit lower.

Since CZ took over Dan Wesson I guess I actually have 5 CZ firearms and yes, you gotta love the way they shoot. Ive got to have multiple thousands of rounds through it at this point and besides nee sights and a few new springs its stock, looks brand spankin new and shoots better than ever. Loves cast 200gr swc too.

Looks great! I have a 457 Scout that needs attention. What did you use to strip the CZ finish? The citrus solvent you mentioned or something else?

May "need" into getting one of those :).

Regarding the wood finish, my guess is they got more complaints about the wood being exposed to the elements than how it looked, so on goes the ugly but effective sealant/coating. Nice refinishing job!

Well - now you've gone and done it!
I'm gonna have to go and SERIOUSLY inspect the stocks on all my CZ's for complete refinishing! LOL!
Just what I needed with hunting season rapidly approaching! Another project! But, if I decide they need refinishing, I'm sure they'll wait til winter when it's too darn cold for me to haul my old bones outside!

Kind words all. Thanks.
I have the 22lr barrel too and actually tried it with some of the better lr ammo's out there and the mag was as accurate or more so so why not go for more punch? Its favorite ammo is the elcheapo Armscore jhp and Ive put more than 1500rds of that through it and still have another 1k to bank. The TNT round and the Gold Dot rounds are just as accurate in it so I banked about 500 each of those plus other assorted.
I personally want another 457 real bad too, the Ameri an. Really sharp little rifle and it has a 24" barrel and is set up for scope only.
Ive seen alot of these little CZ's with really really nice wood. I actually bought mine online and asked the guy how many he had. He replied he had about 10 or something so I just asked if he would pick me out a nice one, and he did. On the other hand Ive seen some with very plain stocks just like most other production firearms but CZs seem to be more apt to get you a nice stock.
If Im not mistaken CZ does use different woods for their different lines but the Varmint (like mine) and the American definitely use Turkish walnut.

Perfectly reasonable and expected but why not something more clear? It wasnt so much the finish per se but the copious amount of very dark brown pigment in it or that went on before it hiding all of that beautiful grain and color.
Thanks for the compliment.

Maybe they were going for Turkish tactical? :)
