I have my 2011 shooting schedule pretty much all USPSA after a 2010 of experimenting with IDPA, too. But I'm still planning on hitting a few IDPA just because it's fun and will be convenient at times (although I still plan to get hit with procedurals for cover, ha)

A local shooter offered me a like new 4-post North Mountain for $75! Was all set to do it then was told IDPA won't allow it.

I'm frugal and want to keep everything the same: holster, belt, moon clip holders. I understand the foundation of IDPA and its gear but man oh mighty how they limit you!

Oh well. Guess I'll just slap on some California Competition mc holders (those are idpa legal, right?).

Drop some loaded rounds on the ground, that always makes them cringe. I shoot IDPA if there is an IPSC match on the same weekend. I like asking the hardcore IDPA guys if they wear their gay IDPA vest out in public and if it makes it in the "real world", since IDPA is supposed to be realistic shooting. I just like messing with them. But hey, any shooting time is good shooting time.

I received more penalties for running/not using cover and reloading, and dropping partially-loaded 9mm mags. Would always hear afterward "you shoot uspsa, huh."

Being the IDPA match director for our club and also being a USPSA CRO has special challenges-----and you think just shooting the two different matches is tough! Let's see, am I supposed to say "the range is safe?" or "The range is clear?" What match is this?

Gay vest? The last IDPA match I shot I got alot of looks as I shot it in my suit and tie...as that is how I would normally be attired. Only had to expain it once at the shooters meeting before the shoot started. They all nodded their heads understanding my reasoning...One professor even did the same thing on the next Wed. eve. IDPA shoot as he liked what I did and thought it make sense to him as well.
I have also shown up with a leather sport coat on as well.
Maybe even dressed up the range a little!

A game's a game.

Dropping mags or loaded rounds?

Hey, I remember being taught NOT to take my finger off the trigger, by Ray Chapman no less.

The North Mountain single post carrier is legal (but of course this means you would have to buy something just for IDPA).

Well, maybe. Get two single posts for IDPA, one front, one back. The first clip on the back is for your initial load. You're then left with two front, 1 back, legal per IDPA rules.

Then you've got 6 posts (12 clips, 72 rounds) for USPSA (if they don't pull your pants down :D).

IDPA has lots of ridiculous rules. I recently started shooting some IDPA matches, and I think half of the competitors shoot it just so they can complain about the rules.

I just think of IDPA along the lines of watching a scifi or action flick; you have to suspend disbelief to enjoy it.

In IDPA's defense, The equipment rules are quit simple, If you would use it to carry ALL Day, then its legal.
The sport was developed for use of typical out of the box equipment to keep the cost down and also not to turn the sport into a equipment race.

Face it if shooter #1 wants to start shooting IDPA he can so with just a glock, holster and 2 spare mag's. appox: 500.00

If shooter #2 wants to shoot USPSA gun, holster, several mags, special belt to hold all the stuff on and lets not forget the special printed shirts, appox: 2500.00.

Bah! You can shoot USPSA with the same Glock, holster and belt. All you need to add is 2 more mags. Get them with the money you saved on the photographer's vest.

Strange, I hardly ever hear a competitor complain at a match, it is just whine, whine, whine on the Internet.

If you don't like IDPA, there are other things to shoot at.
Or you could put up your own time and money and write your own rules and see how many people wanted to play by them.

I quit shooting IDPA in favor of USPSA because of a single rule in which IDPA violates its central premise that weapons and gear should be carried like they are on the street. Further, in three years of e-mails and formal letters, I was barely able to get them to acknowledge that there were problems with the rule on placement of speedloaders on the belt. In the end, they pretty much blew me off.

Their rules state that two speedloaders are to be carried in front of the holster and one behind. That works fine if you do a strong hand reload. If you reload with the weak hand, the two front loaders are hard to get to, and the rear one is impossible. IDPA's solution for me was that I could carry all my speedloaders on the weak side of my body behind the body centerline. That's not how it's done on the street - the loaders would print through almost any cover garment, so on the street, they're carried on the weak side in front of the body centerline.

IDPA is the property on one man, and he wants the rules like he wants them. It doesn't matter that an average shooter plays his game or not. After trying to get things right and failing, I chose to play elsewhere. All I know is... if Jerry Miculec reloaded with his weak hand, the rule would have been changed years ago.

I do IDPA, but to me it is just a form of target practice with a few dozen friends.

I too agree with J. Watson. Most of the complaining I come across is on the internet. I have three good club level matches within an hours drive every month. I've never heard alot of "complaining". There are some shrugs over some of the rules now and then, but folks go with the flow and enjoy the match. I have been nailed a few times for crossing in the open with a weapon in slide lock and a mag in my hand.
