Hi Folks - Can somebody date a M&P for me? Serial number S853160.

Very likely shipped in November, 1946. I have one in my collection that is about 50 numbers lower than yours that shipped that month. So did several others in the same serial range.
Yours is a 4" gun, my nearby example has the 6" barrel. 4", 5" and 6" lengths show up in the S851xxx to S853xxx range.

Also based on my list, an 11/46 shipment seems correct. Recognizing that S&W did not ship in SN order, actual shipment could possibly be within a few months of that. Several M&Ps I have listed having SNs in the S86xxxx range shipped in 12/46 and 1/47.
