DECEMBER 16, 1944

My son in in law's family lives in Belgium and his parents lived through the Nazi occupation. They visited San Antonio years ago and we took them to the Alamo and explained the history of it. They said they had one at home, "Bastogne" that the country hold in reverence.

I once worked for several years with a Bulge survivor but he had been on the German side. He was severely wounded there, and that ended the war for him. He was then only 14 years old, and had been in the Hitler Youth. Not unusual, as it was mandatory for young German boys to join at around age 10. Said he actually saw Hitler on several occasions. That late in the war, Hitler was forcing anyone who could carry a gun into the front lines regardless of age. He migrated to the US in the early 1950s and got a Doctorate in Chemistry. He had some interesting stories and observations about life in Germany during the postwar occupation. He said that he survived mainly by theft for several years after the war's end. He died in 1976.
