The young man was really being bothered by the sun in his eyes. He was sitting at a restaurant table facing me. He shifted this way, then that way, squinted, put his hand up to his forehead, but found no relief. He was being blasted by the sunlight coming through a skylight above. Before my brother and I got up to leave, I asked "should we tell him" ? My brother said "no".... and I was relieved. We both knew there was no way it would not be insulting to suggest he turn his hat around.

Several years ago I saw a great photo of a young man at a NASCAR race. He was watching the field stream down the straight. He was shielding his eyes from the sun with his hand and had his baseball cap on backwards!

Sitting at the dinner table with his hat on ?

Thank you for that.

My local eatery has hooks under the bar. When I eat at the bar (not acceptable in some cultures) I always hang my hat on a hook.

One day I saw a lady jab her fella in the ribs with her elbow and say, "Now there's a gentleman. He takes his hat off to eat."

I thought, "Hmmm, it's too bad it's so uncommon."

Hate to tell ya but those hooks are for lady's purses. Removing ones hat when sitting down and eating at a table is the polite thing to do. When eating at the bar, you get a pass as you are there to eat alone and stare at yourself in the mirror and, if the mood presents itself DRINK. If I am eating or drinking by myself and someone asks me to take off my hat, that person will be instructed to perform an anatomically impossible act upon his/her self.
