Any suggestions for a good deck sealant besides Thompson's water seal? My F.I.L. is doing the work and doesn't like Thompson's. Any help would be appreciated.

I've had good luck with Total Wood Products, TWP I got the recommendation from a home maint. forum.

Go here and do a search. Lots of good info in the painting forum. I would not recommend Thompson's at all. Cabot oil stain is my stain of choice for vertical fence. Decks are tough so choose wisely and don't scrimp. I like oil on my grips and I like oil on my cedar fence.

Here's a shot of 3 year old stain job. Bottom rail is fresh stain. Now the main fence is 5 year old and still looks good.

Put your foot down and tell him he'll use what you tell him to use-it's your deck not his.

One Time Wood, but you'll likely have to order it off the interwebs. It's not cheap, but it lasts a long time. It's not good in shady areas, so be sure to read the directions. ;)

I can only give you one suggestion....do NOT use Thompson's! A waste of money and labor.

Agree with don't use Thompsons. It's full of wax that beads the water up nicely.............and then washes away. Be prepared to retreat every year, if not sooner.
I've had good luck with Olympic. (And don't go cheap unless you enjoy putting it down.)

I have found the cure for the deck. It is called a patio. When I had a deck, I used Thompson's because it worked and the price difference with other products was smalll.
