Heading up to the Ausable River near Luzerne, Michigan tomorrow for Tuesday's opener. First time ever, I have been available to hunt opening week (read unemployed), but unfortunately I will have to hunt alone till Thursday, when my son, son in law and bro in law will come up. Hope to have some meat hanging when they arrive.
Taking my Knight 50 cal muzzle loader and my .270 Weatherby and of course my S&W Model 29 .44 magnum. Hunting from a blind so if I get a close opportunity I may try to take one with my revolver.
Anyway, good hunting to all. Anyone in the area stop in to Ma Deeter's on Saturday (noon to 3) during the Michigan game and I'll buy you a beer. I'll wearing a blue ball cap with "Saints" on it.
Be safe!

I hunted Luzerne once years ago and have visited Ma Deeters a time or two but not this year. I'm hunting right here at home in the shotgun zone though and our cornfed deer. I'll be using my Browning Gold Deer Hunter and S&W model 657 in 8 3/8 inch.
I've been crossbow hunting here already but didn't want to shoot the does and three point buck I've seen so far as I'm waiting for another big buck first. Pretty windy this morning when I went out and didn't see anything.
I hunt alone too now as all my family and friends I hunted with have either moved out of state or have died now. I was going to hunt with my buddy this year but got a call when I was in Mio this summer from his wife telling me he suddenly died. That was a shocker as we'd planned great things this next week and looks like I'll be doing it alone once again.
Good luck to you and hope you have a good hunt.

Brian, sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. It's hard to keep traditions going when you're are the only one interested or alive! Keep with it and try to find someone to share your experiences with. My son in law was a non hunter until he met me, so now he's part of the Ma Deeter's gang. I have been going up with my bro-in law who owns the cabin on the river since the 70's. He has not once shown any interest in hunting but goes up north just to hang out (and cook and chop wood...) Anyway have fun and good luck.

Ma Deeters

Ma Deeters is a blast from the past! One of my high school buddies invited me to go up with his family in the mid 60's. When not hunting his folks hung out at the bar and we stayed in the room "reading" our first Playboy magazines. Never saw a deer but we sure had fun.
Good luck!

Regular season has been open up here in Northern Tier NYS since Oct 22nd. Been spending alot of time in the woods when I can. Filled my doe tag, now I'm trying to catch Bullwinkle with his drawers down! LOL! But he's proving a bit tougher customer! :D

I'm really hoping to get a chance to bag my first deer with a handgun myself as well. Last year I was using my new 686-6, 6". But I recently bought a very slightly used (like 1 shot fired) 629-6 Classic, 6.5". And for some crazy reason, it's the 629 Classic that always ends up finding it's way into the shoulder rig when I head out to the woods. ;)

Good luck this season everybody!

My son has me skunked so far this year. He killed a 4 point buck on the juvenile hunt, and yesterday he killed a doe with MY muzzleloader! I guess I'll just be a guide and butcher this year... Wouldn't trade it for anything.

When things slow down at the three churches I pastor, I am going to grab my M-1 Garand, stuff it full of Rem. 150 gr. Pointed Soft-Points and had for a church member's land where I will do my best to bushwhack a buck!

We have plenty of meat from bow hunting, so friday i'll be looking for a trophy buck. My son saw monster saturday morning but he was out of bow range, I'll probably sit all day friday if my old butt can take it.

Got my first doe last Thursday morning about 6:15 AM. Too bad I used my wife's mini van, instead of a firearm. :(

been hunting hard since Oct 15 in hornell NY, movement has been VERY SLOOOOW. small bucks and doe's. temps have been in the 60's almost every weekend
and also have that full moon. toke several pics of some nice deer during the summer and early fall, a lot of sign early but none of my buddys have seen anything.

I'll be out in the morning on a hardwood ridge overlooking a creekbottom about 10 minutes from home.
Took this one 2 weeks ago with my 6" M29.
Tomorrow I'm gonna up the ante and try to take something (hopefully a doe, already taken 2 bucks) with my 4" M28 .357.

I will be headed to Calhoun County, WV to the old family farm for a week of hunting. Like some of the others, many family members are now gone, including my father. I think of him all the time when I'm in the woods. It seems as though only the woods and church can give a man solitude these days. The sounds and smell are comforting.

I'm leaving Friday with my college friend of 40 years for our annual deer hunt. As for family, both he and I had only sisters so we're like brothers to each other. This year his son-in-law and his wifes cousin will join us along with a friend of mine from work. With the harsh winter we had last year, the deer numbers are down but I'm looking forward to trying out my new stove with a griddle and grill. I'm usually the cook and anymore just spending time with the boys is all the enjoyment I need.

Rifle season begins Wednesday, I'll be hunting a friend's woodlot 35 miles from home. It's just me and him in 90 acres, and another friend owns the adjoining farm. I'll be hunting alone by choice; I enjoy the chance to get away from the rat race.
gjamison, I hunted in Bishopville, Angelica and on Jerusalem Hill outside of Hornell with my cousin during the 80's and 90's. Beautiful country.

Tuesday I will be moving into the same camp I have hunted for 22 years.....I have been hunting deer for 35 years and this is by far the best spot to deer hunt in central Illinois......I have never sat in my stand for more than an hour without seeing deer. I will be doing a lot of shooting and cooking....gotta shoot my 460 a couple times to make sure it's still on and my 629 light hunter 44 mag will get some shooting time as well.....Deer camp is always a needed vacation.....

Opening day, I'll walk out the back door, sit down and fish the ponds awhile. If a decent buck wanders by and decides to commit suicide, then I'll drop the fish pole and the buck too. Gotta love livin' in the big woods, the lazy hunters heaven! Good luck this season to all.

Cheers;
Lefty

We still haven't gotten to gun season yet, but when we do, I'll probably sneak off one morning and go set up over a water hole in the national forest. I think I'll use my .308 this year if they come out on the far side, and if they come out near enough to me, I'm going to try with my 5 inch Model 27. Probably with .38 loads, in deference to that other thread. :D

Heading down to Jasper Co. IL for shotgun season. I hope to get a nice little doe. I really don't care if I get one or not... I just need some time away from work. Sitting in the woods reading a book is all I really want. I have had good luck while reading...I dont fidget around so much. Good luck to everybody and stay safe.
