I didn't put this in the gunsmithing thread because the gun in question is not a S&W. That being said, my question is, will it damage a non steel frame if I use brake cleaner to degrease it before refinishing? Thank you for any advice.

I used brake cleaner on a plastic gun and it turned it cloudy. After it dried I put some silicone on it and it looked good as new.

If your gonna refinish/paint it I don't think it would hurt anything.

Just don't use silicone if you want anything to stick.

If you want to go that way, make sure it's a non chlorinated brake cleaner.
The chlorinated ones will desolve/cloud certain types of plastic and polymers.
I would personally rather see you use Simple Green, it's a lot friendlier to the firearm, and follow up with a Isopropyl Alcohol wash to displace any water.
Also wear gloves as you'll be defeating the whole degrease thing by leaving skin oil on the parts you just cleaned.
