Dental Care Costs Here vs There

I am 73 years old and have gone to the dentist every year since I could remember. The dentist or hygienist have cleaned my teeth every time and has never mentioned "deep cleaning". What is it? I have never heard that term before. My yearly visit is now up to $230. Dental insurance would cost me approximately $400 a year.
Just curious;

This explains it. Forty years of smoking didn't help any, I'm sure: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21482-gum-periodontal-disease

Of course dental work is cheaper in Japan. Most things are cheaper overseas. Hyundai Kia, Yugo anybody?????

I like to put it, "You can buy better, but ya can't pay more!"

I changed dentists because of:

For years I went to the same dentist with no major issues...he retired and sold out to a younger guy just out of school...I started going to him but then he built a brand new office with all the lastest equipment...wow did the prices go up...I should have stated we do NOT have any dental insurance...I broke a filling off in a back molar and went to this new guy...his technician examined me, took x-ray(which cost $95)... then he came in and said you need a crown (cost about $1650)...I asked him why he could not just fill it as the original filling had lasted over 10 years...he stated it would not "hold up." SO I phoned my old dentist's son who is also a dentist...he said to come and see him...he looked at the tooth that needed attention and said I will fill that exactly the way my Dad did years ago...you only do the crown as a last resort...he filled it about 5 months ago and it is STILL OK...I am glad he is a conservative dentist like his Dad was...My advice to anyone that is told you need a crown or cap is GET ANOTHER OPINION FROM A CONSERVATIVE "OLD SCHOOL" DENTIST...Roger
