Here in Houston, I've been dealing with deregulated electric utilities for a many years.

In the case of the TX deregulation it meant that the company that sells and bills you for electricity is different than the company that reads the meter and is responsible for making sure the power stays on. The meter readers and linemen are still a utility monopoly, but the retailers and marketers are deregulated. The retailers are responsible for putting an appropriate amount of juice into the grid for covering their customers needs. If the retailer does not put in enough power, the electricity in your home stays on, but the retailer may go broke.

The smartest people in the room at Enron were big proponents of this plan.

Deregulation has pretty much been a flop. If you understand your electricity use and needs and buy into a suitable plan, you can get a good deal. If all you know is that I paid X-dollars then you are at the mercy of the marketers.

Here in TX we have a website, Power to Choose, where the retail electric providers can be looked up and compared.

I have seen Ambit plans when reviewing electricity plans for myself, but have no experience with them. Currently I use StarTex Power, which is owned by Constellation. I know folks that swear by Reliant which is currently owned by Entergy, because it used to be Houston Lighting & Power.
