I love my J frame. I am just wondering what Colt is thinking. Why offer a single action .380 when all the rage is towards 9mm subcompacts or single stacks? Why bring out a single action 44 special? Isn't there a bigger market for .38 and .357 snub nosed revolvers? Like I said, I love my J frame. No doubt, however, that I would scoop up a new Detective Special or Magnum Carry just to say that I have one. Is Colt afraid to compete with S&W head to head on the snub nosed revolver market? I don't get it. Like I said, I would buy a Colt just to have one. What do you guys/gals think? Will Colt offer these revolvers in the future?

I have a Detective Special, beautiful gun.
While i like the K Frame snubs, I like the Colt D frame more. How about Colt licensing Smith and Wesson to build the real Det Special. Smith and Wesson does seem to have the capacity to make this gun.
Smiths pricing is fair on their 442's/642's. I think they could reproduce these guns at a reasonable price. I would like the option to buy a D frame made by either company.
And, I don't know why anyone would buy the DSII in .380. That is the one mainstream caliber that I don't have anymore.

Colt has a history of mismanagement and poor business decisions. There are a lot of people out there who want Colt double action revolvers (look at the prices; not just Pythons but even King Cobras/Diamondbacks/Anacondas are bringing big money) but Colt doesn't seem to have any inclination to produce them again.

Colt never really mastered the DA revolver mechanism. I own several, but they are not as well designed as the S&W. That said, I also carry a late model Detective Special on a regular basis. It is a six-shot 38 that is just the right size for daily concealed carry.

I love the Colt revolvers except for one thing. It is the weak trigger return on them. The weak return springs cause me to "short stroke" the trigger. I need to shoot them a little to get to them vs the S&W before I carry them as CCW. They are great little guns how ever. The old lock lock-work on the old style revolves can really be tuned to be exceedingly smooth.
I think they mastered the double action revolver 100 years ago.
Colt may be planning some model changes when it moves to Florida, at least I hope so. Maybe they will bring back the revolver to their line up.

Have had a half dozen Dses and Cobras over the past 40 years. They are beautiful, delicate machines. If you want a gun for the long haul have Smith build a K frame the size of a DS.
Or do like I have done buy a Ruger SP101 they are almost identical in size to the DS and they'll shoot 357s till the cows come home. They're five shooters but tough, accurate guns. My Sps share the same holsters as my Colt's.
But Smith with modern materials could build a six shot 38+P on a D frame with a Smith action.

380s are hot right now, possibly the hottest self-defense caliber out there, so a new 380 to replace the lamented "Pony" models makes a lot of sense. The "Old West" shooters lover the SAA, and 44 SPL & 45 Colt are the top calibers for that too, so this isn't a surprise. I really like Colt revolvers, and hope to see at least a partial return of Colts revolver line up. I'll buy them, if they can keep the price at a level the working guy can afford.
