I have a chance to buy a LNIB Detonics MKVI .45acp for $1000.00. The price is right, and I always "kinda" wanted one. Any experience here ?? Comments/opinions appreciated.:)

I consider the Detonics family of firearms to be well designed and well made

I have had several Detonics over the decades, but all of them have either been the Combat Master or the Military Combat

Great guns to pocket carry. It is very easy sweep the hammer (cocking it) on the draw once you get the technique down.

Most of mine were in 45ACP, but one was a 38 Super.

I always wanted one in 451 Detonics Magnum but never came across one when I had cash in my pocket :(

I’ve had three, the first two were new stainless ones. The second, and newest manufactured one had an issue. A chunk fell off of the upper rear corner of the slide. Evidently they had some issues with their casting. Detonics replaced the slide. Long out of business, so no customer support. If it breaks a non-1911 part and a gunsmith is unable to replicate one, you have a really expensive paper weight.

For a carry gun, Kimber makes better sense. I regret trading off the last one I had, an early blued model. Neat gun to have.

I had one and just couldn’t warm up to it. Accuracy was ok, kinda wide and bulky like a brick... not much balance. Enough malfunctions to keep it out of a carry rotation. Better options out there...

A coworker bought a new one back in the day. I expected the worst when we took it to the range for the first time. But the darn thing was totally reliable with whatever ammo we had with us that day. We also tested it from the bench at 25 yards. I don't recall group sizes all these years later, but do recall being pleasantly surprised at the accuracy the little gun displayed.

FWIW, years later, I got some experience with two Colt Officers ACP models owned by others. Neither was reliable with any ammo I tried, even factory ball. One might assume that the Colts would be reliable, and the Detonics suspect as to reliability. But it was the other way around.....

Is it an original, or one of the New Detonics brought back by Jerry Ahern?

I have an early Combatmaster. It's heavy, but it functions well and they are a classic piece of firearm history. $1000 doesn't sound like a screaming deal to me, but they don't come along everyday.

One of my former co workers had one. He may still have it but I haven't seen him in 30+ years or so. He had his upgraded to 451. I think that was just a barrel and spring. I shot it a few times during "3rd shift practice sessions". I don't recall it ever having malfunctions. I thought it was cooler than my brand new 669 but pricier. I never see them for sale now days.

I had a very early one. Functioned flawlessly. Traded it to a good friend. He liked it so much he bought a second one, much later manufacture. The second one was horrible, too many problems to deal with. I think he finally traded it to a gunsmith who thought he could fix it.
