Devel and ASP. Rare Birds

My LGS took in a 39-2 Devel and a 39-2 ASP. I had never seen one before, only read about them. They were both sold in one day. But it was a thrill to see them.

I’ve been around S&W 39 since the mid 70’s. I don’t ever remember seeing either in person. I’m not sure I would’ve bought either or both but it would’ve been a treat to see them.

Paris Theodore and his ASP Pistols are pretty cool. I'd love to add a Devel conversion to my collection. I wouldn't mind picking up a Trapper Scorpion either...

There is a currently a Model 39-2 Devel on one of the popular gun auction sights for just shy of $6K. I like 39's but I don't like them that much. You can get better guns with that much moolah.

I was working at a local shop when both came out. I remember taking receipt of at least two of each for customers as special orders. I was still in school and didnt have the cash for a 39, much less the modification. I had just made a great buy on a 1959 VW.

I accidently stumbled onto an ASP about six years ago. It was mixed in with 4 other guns for sale on a Calif. site. I jumped on it immediately. The seller was only 40 miles away. He wanted $1700 for it. The gun was in mint condition, but it had no magazine. I was able to negotiate a better price, although I had the full $1700 cash in my pocket. Little did I know it would take three years to find a magazine. A tip from a member here completed my search. It's a beautiful little gun. I don't plan on ever shooting it. First thing I did was loosen the grip screws to prevent stressing the Lexan and then I gave it a coat of Renaissance Wax. Sadly, many of these guns have stress cracks in the Lexan from over tightening the grips.
I'm still searching for memorabilia associated with the ASP.

A question relative to prior post - why wouldn’t a regular magazine work ? I understand the ASP mag was cut away to see the round count and it had the cool little extension - but was there a function issue ?

Mr Baxter, good question. If the catch position is the same as an original 39
a 39 mag would function, just stick out of the frame. Maybe s&wchad will try it and let us know.

Wichita gun club is a frequent poster on 1911 addicts, asp was listed at 6000, devel at 7500.

OK. I dug my ASP out of the safe to see if a standard 39-2 magazine would fit. The magazine does fit in the Magazine well. It does lock in and ejects as usual. Whether it functions or not - no idea.

Mr. 3S16, Looks like it sticks out the same as the ASP finger extension.
