That's sad. I remember seeing him race ASA near Cincinnati in the mid 1980's. I believe it was called Oueen City Raceway. RIP

Oh wow. :(

I have to call my dad and let him know. He and a local racer Terry Sauer used to work on Trickle's car when he raced the short tracks here in Wisconsin.

Trickle was something of a legend around here.

I think it would be really hard to grow old after living like some of these pro racers do.

Dick was a great racer, and good guy. Dick really hung in there a long time. Anyone that thinks otherwise, just didn't know Dick.

No one seems to have any idea how many races Dick Trickle won in his career, not even Trickle himself, but it was surely over 1,000. I first heard of him when I was a teenager, and found my first copy of "Stock Car Racing" magazine about 1970-71. Even in the monthly magazines he quickly became larger than life. This guy won everywhere it seemed.

He turned down offers to come south and race with NASCAR for years, "Daytona was a long way from Wisconsin in those days" he said, but finally took the plunge when Stavola Brothers racing asked him to take the place of the injured Bobby Allison. Trickle at the age of 49 won the Rookie of the Year award in NASCAR's top division in 1989. He never won a cup race, but did win twice in the Grand National division.

He could wheel a race car.

RIP Dick.

Not to sound ignorant on this......but is THAT really his name? Don't want to speak badly of the dead but that sounds more like a social disease than a name! Sorry.

Yes, that is his real name (Richard Trickle). It was on the door of all his race cars. He used to laugh about it and say, he'd had to deal with it all his life.

I always thought of the grief a drill sergeant would give the poor recruit named Dick Trickle.

Or even filling out forms, last name / first name...

But yes, that was his name and he gained a LOT by having such a unique and memorable name.

Could have made a fortune being a spokesman for Flomax I think.... :p

That just ruined my day - RIP to him, thoughts to his family. Trickle was the one man who stood out to me in NASCAR as someone I'd genuinely like to have a beer with.
