Did you order a Porsche?

Was at my Mazda/VW/Volvo dealer's last week getting a new Mazda. The paperwork guy told me that they had several VWs on that ship. He said their buyers were being pretty reasonable about it, and that he thought that VW was likely to do something for their buyers in recompense.

There was a massive house fire last week just a few miles away from where I live, complete and total loss and they suspect it was an electric car in the garage that was the cause.

How prevalent is this?!

Fahrvergsinken???

the fire may have been caused by a battery in one of the electric vehicles in the shipment

That's why EV's should be parked in the driveway, not in the garage.

VW and the shipping company are covered by insurance. The vehicle buyers and future insurance customers will suffer the most from this.

I have ordered three Porsches from the factory over the years. I tracked them from Germany to the port and one of them (can't remember which one) was on the same ship. Luckily all of mine got here OK.

Apparently not as bad as some realize

They are very very tough, EV fires, to extinguish though. That is, the car component of the fire itself.

They can burn for quite awhile, tying up emergency services, or they can reignite hours or days later.

It is a real problem. The GM Bolt is under recall now for potential battery fires. GM recommends that until you have the recall performed that you do not park or charge the vehicle in your garage. As the batteries heat up, especially while being charged, an internal short can occur resulting in the batteries catching fire.

When my California friend visits e in his Tesla, he parks it in front of my garage, and I bring a 220 extension from the garage to his car to charge it overnight. I think I need a longer extension, like about 100 feet.

I am certainly no expert, but I have also seen stories about EV battery fires. If one happens, the whole car (and maybe its surroundings) is toast, and such fires don't respond to being extinguished. There can be a great deal of energy stored in those batteries and it has to go somewhere.

The story I read said that the ship went down in about 10K feet of the Atlantic off Portugal. There won't be any salvage efforts possible.

Sad but funny story about a Porsche that sunk in the Intercostal Waterway some years ago.
At a barbecue with some Doc buddies they told me that a Shrink drove his Porsche into the water. Seems he had pharmaceutical issues. When he surfaced he dove back down to get his stash. When he surfaced again the Boys in Blue put on the cuffs.

Decades ago I was outfitting some boats at the 15th Street Fisheries. Low tide and a newbie was launching his boat with his late model BMW convertible. Boat and car slide down the ramp.
He stood up in the mostly submerged car, looked around at us and just started laughing.

Yup. According to the BBC article:
Joao Mendes Cabecas, the captain of the nearest port on the island of Faial, told Reuters that no oil leak had been reported so far but said there were fears the fuel tanks could be damaged while the vessel lies at the bottom of the Atlantic at a depth of around 3,500 metres (2.17 miles).

I can see insurance rates for EVs going up, and/or fire suppression equipment being required in garages. Can you imagine one of these lighting up in the undergrouond parking of an apartment with dozens of ICE vehicles around it?

The posted video of the 928…

Maybe the BEST Porsche to drop in a body of water! That car was about as ugly as they could possibly have managed. -HURL-
