DIES FOR DIFFERENT 9 MM CARTRIDGES

Just for those who may have guns in different 9mm calibers, Parabellum, Largo, Browning Long, etc. Just buy a die set for 9MM parabellum (Luger, 9x19, etc.) to load for all of these. Several years ago I was trying to find a correct 9mm Largo carbide die set and ended up with RCBS, Lyman, Redding and one other. All of them were simply 9x19 dies that varied only by the caliber marking on the dies and box! Sized cases were identical from all the die sets. Expensive lesson!

...that if you set the dies to where your rounds would plunk in a 9mm Largo barrel that was what the manufacturer intended rather than making a separate die. Give it a try.

The Firing Line forum also recommends using a .38 special die and 9mm expander.

You very obviously did not understand the purpose of my post!!! The intent was strictly to advise that die sets for several nominal 9mm cartridges are simply 9x19 dies with different caliber markings.

I have a set of 9x23 dies too, don't recall the brand but probably RCBS. They are downstairs and I am not, but they are 9x19 just like the others! I doubt anything has changed, but let me know. The way to tell is compare where the shoulder of the case compared to a 9x19 sized in a 9x19 marked die. The longer cases will have a longer neck, but the shoulder will be in the same place.

9x23 Win dies are essentially elongated 9x19 dies. They work OK with 9x19 cases. I have loaded 9x19 with 9x23 dies but have not tried the reverse. I assume 9x23 dies will also work with 9mm Largo and 9mm Steyr cases. I have also used .38 Super dies successfully with .38 S&W and 9x23 cases. I have not tried using .38 Super dies for loading 9x19 but I suspect they would work.

9x19 dies will not work with 9x18 Makarov due to the Mak's larger bullet diameter (.364-.365) and slightly different case dimensions when comparing the two rounds.

I have accidentally loaded 380 on my Dillon Square Deal set up for 9mm , never notice until I was putting the rounds in boxes. Shot OK in my 380, I don't load hot rounds for killing paper. I was loading a bunch of range picked upped brass and thought I had them all sorted.

Not sure why I went off on a tangent and I don't remember the reasoning, if any.

I recently bought a set of .380 dies. I didn't want to use my 9mm set because they are (finally) set up good. But I forgot that I had a spare 9mm LEE set for some reason that I could have tried. Well, durn.

I MAY try it just for kicks.

The 38 Super, 9mm Browning Long and 380 cases are all straight sided rather than tapered like the 9mm Luger. They are smaller diameter in front of the extractor groove than the 9x19. It thus depends on how much sizing you need. The 9x19 sizer will not size the straight-wall cases other than at the case mouth. That may be adequate for your needs, or not.

Reading this thread top to bottom I read all the way to the bottom to make sure the straight wall .380 ACP difference was covered. A 9mm die will not size the base of the case and they won’t work in a tightly chambered .380 ACP pistol.

In addition the rim is smaller and barely hangs on in a 9mm plate on a Dillon press.

I have a Hornady sizer labeled “9mm / 9x21” and another labeled “9x23”. There is a .010” difference in the SAAMI specs for the case mouth between 9x23 and 9mm Luger. Using a micrometer on factory ammunition from Winchester for both cartridges, the forward end of the cases measured .377 and .369 respectively.

The real test would be resizing a case of each cartridge in both dies. I am embarrassed to say that I could not find the shell holder this morning.

One possible but unmentioned problem concerns the expansion and seating dies. I reload .38 S&W using a .38 Super sizing die. However the ..38 Super expansion and seating dies cannot be adjusted low enough to work with the shorter .38 S&W cases, so I must use the corresponding 9x19 dies for that. I normally use the .38 Super die set to load both .38 Super and 9x23, even though I also have a 9x23 die set. Never tried loading .380 using anything other than my .380 die set, so I don’t know about that.
