I am looking to purchase my first 3rd Gen S&W in 45ACP and have read many old posts regarding both of these fine pistols.
Currently my EDC is either a 3" Kimber Ultra CDP or my new S&W "E" Series SC. I had a Glock 36 in 45ACP, but just didn't like the trigger and the plastic. It had the cut out grip frame like the older style 4513TSW and I didn't mind that at all.
Can anyone tell me the difference between the 4513TSW and the Shorty 45? Unfortunately where I live in SW Florida, there are no 3rd Gen S&W's to be found and I will have to buy from GB or other internet web site.
I read in a 3 year old post, that the Shorty 45 had non "MIM" parts. Any truth to that?
I really appreciate all of your help on this matter.

The bigest difference is that the Shorty is done by the PC. Same base gun just built by the PC and done right.

There is a difference in quality.

Never owned a 4513 that wasn't a Shorty 45. I have owned four or five 4516s however, and they were 'combat accurate'. Four to six inches at 25 yards was all they'd deliver.

My Shortys however will go less than an inch at that distance. The slide, barrel and frame are numbered at the PC to keep them together as they are all hand fitted to each other. They have the titanium Briley barrel bushing and you really know it's hand fitted when you go to reassemble after cleaning.

There is zero play between those three components, zero. I can feel no motion at all, and the accuracy shows it.

From what I've read here about the standard 4513s they are the normal level of gen 3 reliability, meaning very. I don't know how you can improve on that but if you can the Shorty will do it. Mine eats anything, including empty brass straight from the mag.

I would venture that squidsix has either never shot one or the difference in accuracy between the two is not visable in his shooting. Not intending to flame you squid, just the facts. The first mag I put through my first one was not taliored to the gun it was just a load that I happen to like. It is a full combat load, not an 'accuracy' load.

The first eight shots made a group at 20 yards that hid completly behind (the entire group) a US quarter. And that may not be the limit of the gun, it was just the best I could do. Here she is.

I have no experience with the shorty 45.

My former PD issue 4513TSW no-rail shows some small amount of frame wear under the slide after around 3000 rounds. I don't shoot bull's eye, can't even see the durn thing at 25 yards, but at 2-7 yards I can hit the 8" paper plate every time in SD practice shooting. I have Trijicon sights, ambi safety which I rarely use. It carries easily, and it is my EDC. Never had a FTF.

Whichever one you get, I think you won't be disappointed.

One posting comparing the two.
