For me, I live in the valley at the base of a large mountain range, and also at the edge of two different vast deserts (a high cooler desert and a low very hot desert). So, I have to adapt to at least three different environments. Many of you seem to have only one environment you have to deal with, so you firearm necessities appear to be fewer and much more simple....
In urban areas and/or for home defense, the choices are pretty straight forward for me. An ultralight J-frame pocket revolver, and a compact or sub-compact Glock.
In the foothills or desert, there can be large cats, but no bears. Outdoors, I have always perfered a revolver to an auto, so for car camping where weight doesn't matter, a heavyish steel .357 is fine, but for hiking or riding something lighter like a scandium J-frame works out better.
Up in the mountains, it is big time black bear country. After years of trying all kinds of different guns, I have finally settled on the 329NG as the ideal choice for hiking/backpacking or riding. For car camping where weight isn't an issue, the heavier but still very compact Ruger Alaskan fits the bill.
