My wife has a pair of felco garden pruners that she prizes. The rubberized coating on the handles are peeling off and someone recommended dip n grip coating in a bottle to replace them. Reviews are mixed, does anyone have experience with this product or is there a better way to go? Thanks in advance..

I came to appreciate a couple pairs of Felco pruners while working building maintenance. I liked them so much I bought my wife a pair of the smaller cutters for her roses, she is nowhere near as careful as I am and will use the small cutters to lop off dead limbs nearly an inch across. She has yet to wear out the plastic coating the handles, this past year I took them apart and sharpened both the smaller set I gave her and a larger set I brought home from work. I'm not sure but Felco may offer a set of replacement handle coverings. I have used the dip it plastic stuff for a few homemade tools I built for the Model A, as well as a covering over rifle rest for use on a bench that does not have a fixture to hold a rifle in place. I do have to drill a hole in the bench, then screw my rest in place. I welded some1/4" round stock bent into a "U" shape onto a 1/4" lag screw , works great, the plastic will wear off on the edges where it gets the most use but for the most part has held up to protect the barrel. I did use a couple of dippings, everything must be clean.

I have not used a product sold for that use, but the black liquid electrical tape for covering electrical wire connections also works for covering tool handles. Sort of like a thick black paint, sets up at room temperature.

Mechanics at the plant would dip in that or a similar product in various colors to ID their tools. Some had a hard plastic finish while others were rubberized. Neither held up very well with rough handling.

I've had a pair of Felco #2's since they cost about $25, which was a lot for a nipper in '03 after the boss lady wouldn't let me keep the city issued pair when I moved over to Utilities. I used grip tape to cover the small piece of rubber that began to flake off on the pivot end of the blade handle.

I would most likely use self fusing silicone tape to cover the handle even though Felco sells replacement rubber for 5$ and change.
