I was perusing the aisles at a local gun show this morning when I stumbled on a S&W 1917 in an old S&W box. I really got excited whenI saw the $325 price tag. It had some blue gone and some wear but did not look too bad especially for the price! Well after opening the cylinder and looking down the barrel my heart sank. The rifling was totally gone for half the length of the barrel....oh well. I then spotted another newer Smith with a 4 inch full underlug barrel. It turned out to be a 625 in .45 ACP for $650. I made the comment that if it had been in Long Colt I would have jumped on it. He then told me that the 1917 would shoot .45 Long Colt and .45 ACP. I tried to explain it was Auto Rim and ACP but he had never heard of .45 Auto Rim and said I didn't know what I was talking about. I decided to head elsewhere at that point.

Probably best that you moved on to greener pastures. No sense in wasting your time arguing with someone over that nonsense. Good luck at the next show!

I hope the " old S&W box" was not an original Model 1917 commercially shipped box! At $325 you could throw away the gun and make money selling the box on Ebay! Ed #15

I go to a lot of gun shows and one thing that I have learned over the years is that there are some gun dealers out there that know nothing about what they are selling. Or could care less. They are only interested in making the sale and will say anything to do it. And if you try to argue or correct them, they want nothing to do with you. It's always best to move on.
