currently looking at a no dash 581, and after a little research I stumbled on the phrase "first series" which meant the S&W logo was on the right side of the frame. the one I'm looking at has the logo on the left side. were these early series part of an early run? and do they go for a higher price? and what does a VG condition 581 no box go for these days.

as always thanks

Last no dash on GB went for $505. A dash 2 went $555. Well used, most would call it good to very good. Tough one to value, they don't turn up very often. Don't know what the production numbers were but I'm thinking not very many.

Yeah, those early series with the logo on the right side are kinda rare. They're sort of like the hidden gems of the collection world. As for the price bump, it really depends on the collector's market and the condition. A VG 581 without the box could fetch a decent sum, especially if it's in good working order. Might be worth checking out some online forums or gun shows to gauge the market.

Currently nine on GB. Never recall seeing that many there before. The one stamped 58-1 starting at $2500?? Mine is stamped that way and don't think that adds value to the Model 581??

Here are some prices from sold guns. Prices are all over the place.

I've been all over the net, but I can't find many details regarding production runs, or the early production series. did find a you tube video of a miss-stamped 581, stamped 58-1 though.

In my travels, it has occurred to me that any L-frame with the large emblem on the side plate instead of the small emblem on the left side is also a revolver that was shipped in the old school two-piece blue box with the metal reinforced corners.

Only the very earliest of the L-frame revolvers have the large emblem on the side plate. S&W decided to move all of them to the left side to free up the side plate for any large organizations (LE or otherwise) who wanted to spend more and have their logo emblazoned on the revolver.

The bulk of the L-frames have the small emblem on the left side under the cylinder release and the first MANY years were shipped in the one-piece flip top blue box that said REVOLVER REVOLVER REVOLVER on it.
