After hearing elders state we had Native American ancestry, was surprised to find out I am 99% European, with a dash of West African descent...English, French, German and Irish...and some questionable ancestry in Scandinavia. Irish explains my sister's red hair, and not Clairol...So much for the Mayflower link of family lore...and there goes my dream of an Indian Casino in my name. Sad, sad.

Nope, I'm originally from New England... Just kidding. Neanderthals were the first people to head north, probably for the skiing...bodies acclimated for cold weather, short legs and arms, heavily muscled, wide nostrils..when the next wave came along (Cro-Magnon), they probably said "Who are these guys?" Died out about 30,000 B.C. Were the first to establish elaborate burials for the deceased, and cave paintings.

Yeah, they store it on Facebook's drives! Now they know who to target for Reverse mortgages and essential oils...just kidding about that. All they in the government do is see the census info, and the ethnic boxes you check don't break things down to specific origins. French, English, German, Irish...one block to check off. Next time will identify myself as Native American (I WAS born here) and share my peace pipe with them if they inquire....and my Cleveland Indians ball cap...

Wow! I'll bet you were devastated when you found out that you have no American Indian blood.
Both my Dad and my Uncle Roy told me that we're Blackfoot. They taught me some phrases, words and a few stories.
It had been a family secret since both of them could pass for what was known as "Black Irish." Even though the Irish were discriminated against back in my Dad's generation, it still wasn't as back as being an Injun.
I'm not sure why but I show my Injuness more than they did.

Haven't gotten my results back yet. I was always told there was some Cherokee in the DNA. I kinda doubt it but should know soon. My daughter gave me and my wife a kit from Ancestry for Christmas so we'll see what it shows. Her mom was a WWII war bride from Ireland so those results should be interesting.

My wife is a very good amateur genealogist, (I used to call her the family snoop) and one of her Aunts swears that they have Native American Indian ancestors. My wife has never found any documentation to support that story and she always questioned where the information came from.
Several of them have now had the DNA test run and just as my MBH (much better half) said for years, no Indian, injunn, nothing.

DNA tests are a blast! They are a lot of fun. Make sure you write down your guesses before you send in your test.

Native American: Family Legend Confirmed! My uncle said that would explain why I have always loved the flight of the arrow.

Please bear with me as I delicately explain the following:

FTR I am a big white guy with a red beard. I was certain that I had the DNA for a certain race in my blood. Too many stereotypes fit me. Ladies of that race have always loved me for some reason. It is uncanny and my wife has noticed it over the years. Anyways, my wife and daughter were like NO WAY. Impossible! We received the results... CONFIRMED!! Told you so!!

Somehow I ended up more Irish than most Irish citizens,not German as had been told by relatives who should have had some idea. My family has been here for generations but must have stuck with Irish husbands and wives without realizing it. If you haven’t tested you may be surprised!

My 108-YO M-I-L wanted to get her DNA tested. She's originally from the deep south (central Alabama) and always thought she had some Cherokee blood in her. Test said she was all Scotch-Irish, no Cherokee.

I know my ancestry on both sides back to the early 19th century. Mostly German with a few English. That's good enough for me.

Many of my grandparents and great-grandparents have German or French names. Got my results - nothing from France or Germany but a lot of Welsh/Scottish/Irish (which I suspected) and a lot of eastern and southern European and some Scandinavian. Didn't expect any of the last three.

Five people in my family and the results came back pretty much as you would expect for the kids based on the parents results. Not sure about how accurate country of origin is but from what I understand basically correct for most areas.

A major flaw in all genetic analyses run by the commercial "DNA pirates" is that their databases are only small fractions of the whole. Now can I sell you this nice DNA portion that shows you are "insert choice here" and send money!! Dave_n
