I am an FFL in Nevada. We predominatly sell modern, polymer, black guns and rifles although we do carry and sell (when we can get them) some lever rifles and revolvers. One of my distributors offered me a 617 today and I am just wondering if people still buy these. For anybody that knows about it, its not a budget revolver and seems like a good chunk of change for a 22LR revolver. I collect too and have a nice group of Colts as well as Smith's but this is brand new so its not a collectible. I realize this is somewhat of an odd question but I was just wondering. The Smith SKU is 160584

FYI: I got offered a Performance Center model 41 which I am going to ask this same type question in the proper forum as well since I am somewhat ignorant about that one as well and its twice the $$ of this revolver.

Thanks!

Thanks!

I just did a search for completed Gun Broker auctions of this model. I found 4 pages of closed auctions, nearly 200 guns and most sold and many had dozens of bids. Most prices were from $800 to $1900 ...long answer, yes they sell.

I bought a 6" just before the China Virus Crisis hit us.

I did feel the need to replace the supplied grips with something that was not synthetic. I had this one at the range last Tuesday. One of our fellow Forum Members was also there shooting it

One of my shooting buddies just bought a 4" at the start of this year

For your information, I do not buy black plastic/polymer pistols with a few exceptions, those being HK and Smith & Wesson

A few years ago I looked for one for months. It was apparently between production runs. Finally found one at a Farm King. They had to transfer it internally from Iowa to the store near me in Illinois. When I went to buy it the store manager told me he had to open it up to see how a .22 revolver could possibly cost $800

I like mine. My shooting buddy did too. He bought the same model. Four inch barrel. I even had T K Customs do an action job on it. Smooth as silk.

I’ve been looking for a 4” 617 for a while, haven’t seen one in a shop for over a year. Local auction had a couple of -1’s, but they brought way more than I was willing to spend for the shape they were in.

I have a 6” Colt Diamondback and a 4” 617. The 4” balances better and holds 10 rounds, so it gets shot a lot more often. I love them both. People pay even more for the Colts.

When a 22 revolver is made with the exact same materials to the same level of quality as its centerfire counterparts from the same manufacturer I can't understand how people think its still too much to pay because its "only" a 22?

I bought a used 617-5 for $725 last year and in 35 years of owning Smith revolvers I shoot it better than any centerfire Smith I've owned.

When it comes to a 22 revolver, there aren't exactly better models. Cheaper DA 22s aren't that common and aren't nearly as good.

What's a Ruger sp101 22 go for these days? $6-700?

The 617 is the most popular .22 revolver in sports like SCSA all over the world and other sports that have .22 revolver divisions, also it's just plain fun to shoot.

I'm mostly a revolver guy and it doesn't surprise me that you feel that way about .22 revolvers, you're probably in an area that's not into hunting, plinking or rim-fire sports, your customers are probably just interested in self defense. I've seen other gun shops that don't carry revolvers. If your customers are not asking for 617's then you may not sell many but they don't stay on the shelves very long here in Michigan.

Since you have a shop then a 617 on the shelf should gather some interest (even if it has the lock - which it will) as not all of us are into the black plastic guns… I recall you have some nice ranges in your area and if any have matches then the model 41 PC may be of interest but it is pricy and I don't believe they are fast sellers.

another 617 owner here, I've got a 4", 10 Shot Pre-Lock model. Ilike it because it's comparable to my 686 in weight and feel.

You probably aren't going to sell that 617 to some random dude, dudette or other off the street. However, a revolver aficionada will probably pick it up smiling.
