Big , looks like 1983. Should not be pinned or recessed. 4" or 3" ? Did you just get it ?

4", just got it. Paid for but not picked up. Thanks for the info. I've been focusing on N frames, which are drying up in my neck of the woods here in CA, but other models I'm looking for are dropping in my lap. Go figure! (I just noticed that the second pic. has a card showing the original purchase date of 9/9/82. Got the pic from the prev. owner. Tidewater Police and Sportsman Supplies sounds like the Norfolk, VA area. For some reason Photobucket.com really blows up my pics.)
Just as an aside, since I only purchase used non-IL S&Ws, the CA cert. list of approved handguns/1 per 30 day regs don't come into play. I can keep buying non-IL guns 'til I or money run out. (Where, oh, where are the 4" 581s hiding?)
