Stay away from Victory drive are and Phoenix City also!
Columbus is a pretty nice town, mix of a decent size city with alot of rural redneckyness close by.

I spent the longest, hottest Summer of my life there in 1992. ;)

I didn't get to see any of Columbus but we were told by our Drill Sergeants to avoid Victory "VD" Drive outside Ft Benning.

Hope this helps.

Where not to go?

Stay out of the woods! If the hogs don't kill you, the rattlesnakes will. They are reported to have the biggest rattlesnakes on the east coast in that area near the river.

Crazy K38,

I lived in columbus for a few years in the late 90`s and enjoyed it . Shooter`s was a good range and received guns for me, when I needed a transfer. Decent gun shows at the Iron Works also--- bought a stone mint mod. 28-2 for $175.00 at a show there. Good hunting locations within 30 minutes in all directios. It is very hot and humid throuhout the summer and summer seems to last at least 7 months. Good job opportunities for those willing to work.
Hope this helps.

There is nothing wrong with PHENIX CITY I lived there for 13 yrs and yes stay away from Victory dr. unless you are going to Ranger Joe's. Not much for outdoor ranges but there is one just south of Phenix City, East Alabama Gun Club

PS watch out for the east side of Columbus also.

Crazy 38, born and lived in Phenix City all of my life except when my stepdad wasn't dragging us from one army post to another. Some reps die hard and is so of PC. Nothing wrong here that you won't see in every other city in this country. My wife and I have discovered that "Bubba" exists everywhere you go. Not just in the south or Phenix City.

Do most of my business in Columbus. I don't know what type of work you do or what you want to do but the job opportunities are here in this area. Because of the armor school relocating to Benning, some 1600 addditional jobs are due to be created in the civilian market. Before it is completed by 9-2011 some $3.5 billion will have been spent at Benning since the move started. A few years ago, the payroll at Benning was some $115 million a month and contractors provided another $100 million monthly. That is a lot of cashola. It is even more now. A strong Chamber of Commerce in Columbus and they recently got NCR to relocate in Columbus. A lot going on here.

Living in Columbus/Phenix City really puts you some 5 hours away from the mountains or the beaches. Plenty of hunting in this area as well as fishing. Some of the best fishing as Springfield 45 knows is in his area of Eufaula, Al.

Lot of nice people in this area. If you would like to contact me at my work email, it is [email protected] and I will be glad to assist any way that I can, job, housing, whatever. Who knows you might like it here.

Take care

Crazy if you like fishing then this is the place, Eufaula prides it's self on being the BASS CAPITAL of the world.

In the summer there is a fishing tourny every weekend and even the big boys come to play, we get the FLWand BASS MASTERS tours here.

I lived in Columbus/Phenix city for almost 18 years and loved it.If your into shooting indoor range style go to shooters,if you like outdoor shooting style go out to FT Benning's English range( it was open to civilians)If you like to fish and stay close try lake harding, lake oliver or my favorite hiding spot just up the road,Mullberry creek. Now if you want a taste of the best b-b-q in both states to me was 13th st b-b-q by the post office in Phenix City, after that it was chicken combers also in Phenix City and a close 3rd was country's b-b-q.

Do stay away from Victory dr and 4th ave in Columbus.Another piece of advice, don't go around or even near the ant mounds.they will cause you more pain than you will ever know(they are fire ant hills and it aint fun).If you want to have the most fun getting lost go for a drive into Lee county, all the roads are Lee county road(pick a number)(much sarcasm about anything lee road)

Hey now, there's nothing wrong with the roads in Lee County, Alabama. I went to Auburn and drove all of the backroads there. Later, I was a Lee Co deputy and patrolled them.

How could you get lost in Bleeker, Beauregard, Smith's Station, or Loachapolka? :D

Muley Gill, when were you a dep. for Lee County? Jay Jones is the Sheriff now. I remember when he was a road deputy. Been in a couple of 10-100's in the old days when they would run north into lee County. I have pictures that would not help him get reelected. Lochapoka, the syrup sopping festival in October. Who would want to miss that? Beauragard and some of the other little towns are now the meth centers for lee County. My , how times do change. Worked at one of the local banks when they changed the Lee Rd. names to Lee Rd. # and one day one of my coworkers said" that has to be the longest road in Alabama, everybody lives on Lee Rd." Yeah, she was a blonde. We all laughed until we hurt. If you ever get back this way, look me up.

Hey is jo-lynn's still out there in the smiths. They had the best ham and eggs i ever ate.I so miss it down there.

I used to work with the Russell county Sheriff's office as a reserve and we had our share of fun out on some of those same roads.Thats been a long time ago.Hey is Tommy Boswell still Sheriff or did Heath Taylor get it.

Tommy Boswell is still sheriff and jo-lynn's is no more don't know how long you have been gone but Smith's and the ladonia area has really grown.
and we lost the best place to eat Chicken Comers. and as far as Bar-b-que Mike & Ed's beats all the rest.

I was a Lee Co deputy from 1976 to 1978. Jay and I took classes together at Auburn. I was working there when he left and went to Evergreen PD as a dispatcher. I left the sheriff's department not long after Jay came back.

Jim Pearson was the sheriff, Jerry Popwell was the chief deputy, Ms Kat Chapman was the head Matron, then Lt, and Cary Torbert was the patrol Lt.

I knew Sheriff Chapman also. I saw Mike Pearson, Sheriff Pearson's son, in Afghanistan in 2007. He was a police advisor then.

Biggs357, when were you at RCSO as a reserve? I've been a reserve since 1974 when Prentiss was Sheriff. I really miss that guy. Rode with him every FRiday night. Like a dad to me. Also rode with Rod Powell and he left after he became Chief Deputy and Tommy was Sheriff. I believe they are grooming Heath for Sheriff. Wouldn't surprise me. Tommy and I were on the Board at the Chamber of Commerce and he told me he is retiring. I remember Chicken Comers bar b que, but it was different because my first trip was as a kid and it was still segregated. Whites in one side and blacks in the other and the doors were marked. Good stuff but dang that sauce would set your hair on fire and when you got through eating your were soaking wet from sweating.

Muley Gill, we used to have some wild Christmas parties and Jay and his wife would always attend. The guy I rode with at the time had a birthday a few days of Christmas and we'ed all get together at his house and just be crazy for a while. Good times. Seems like a million years ago. I see Jay every once in a while but don't have much time these days to visit. Stay safe out there.
