My FFL will be pinning the 17 rounders that come with the Flat Dark Earth M&P 9 so they are legal in the Peoples Republic of New Jersey but I'd like to know if I could use standard M&P 9 15 round mags in the pistol? Not sure on the length since I don't have the gun yet. Waiting for availability. Thanks.

Isn't the "stanadard" mag capacity for a full size 9mm 17 rounds? The only 15 round mag I know of is for the full size .40. If you're asking if you can use the 40 mags in your 9, no they would have feeding issues.

No, I thought I saw 15 round 9mm mags for the M&P? If not I'l just get a few more 17s pinned. NJ gun laws suck!

I've never heard of a 15 round factory mag for a full size M&P9. There are only 17 and 10 available.

In CA we have a 10 round limit. It's quite common to have FFLs pin/block the mags.

As Ray says, the .40s will likely have feeding issues. The followers are different and there are variations in the feed lips over the 9s.

NJ has a 15 round mag limit so go with a .40 S&W instead of 9mm. 9mm is very effective in JHP and that's what I use but I understand in NJ you can only use JHP for home defense or at the range. You can't carry it. I could be mistaken though.

Since the .40s are bigger, you can get more than 15 rounds of 9 in the .40 mag so you would need to block the mag anyway.

What surely not???

Thanks for the replies. If the gun will take standard M&P9 10 round mags thats fine. Its true that HP is only allowed for home defense in NJ. I'll get the 2 it comes with pinned (I have to anyway) then just go with 10 rounders if they work. Now all I need is the gun but according to my FFL there aren't any available right now.

If you buy a .40 S&W you can get a .40 to 9mm conversion barrel and have the best of both worlds.

As for carry and NJ: That's a BIG NO. This is one of most unfriendly states when it comes to gun laws! Don't ever take your gun rights for granted because we practially don't have any in this state.

The 10 rounders will fit. S&W uses the M&P Compact mag bodies and an extended floor plate to make up the difference in length.

Beware, they still use the full length springs so loading the 10th is a pain. There's a zillion threads on making 10 easier. If you over do it and get in 11, no problem for you, big problem for us.

Thanks again. I shouldn't complain when California has a 10 round limit. I'm fine with 10 at the range no big deal. For home I'll use the pinned 17s so I'll have 15. They were pushing for a 10 round limit in NJ last year but it failed. I have 10s for all my guns anticipating that some day it may pass.

I just hope it doesn't take my LGS forever to order my FDE version. I have the M&P black .22 and I love it. Also have the AR version and that too is fun to shoot. I would just like to have the 9 in the dark earth finish. I think it looks good.

Crosscheck63 What bullet type are you using for defence?? NJ has a no HP law right ?? RN bullets are a last choice for defense. Maybe a flat point in a 40 would be better for you. Recoil with factory fodder is very close to the same as a 9mm in the full size m&p and ammo tends to be easy to find with a flat point . Winchesters train and defend line has a 180gr flat nose at a slow 925fps .

hi,
for what its worth, Smith DID make 15 rd mags for the FS9mm, I have 3 of them.. thought they still did, but just checked Midway and it only shows 10 &17 now. got mine a year or so ago from them.. played hell trying to find 10 rd mags last year when Jersey was flirting when the mag ban AGAIN, finally got one from Smith and two from Midway..
good luck finding your gun!

I did the same with the 10 rounders last year and got one for all my guns. Only have the M&P .22 pistol and the M&P AR 5.56, M&P 15-22 but they were good. My other two Smiths are 686s so no issue there but I have several Berettas and a couple springfields so by the time I was done dropping alot of coin they killed the 10 round limit for now. Anyway, I'm ready just in case.

At the moment my Beretta 96 40 Cal protects the house although the XDM 45 would work as well. I like the rail option for a light.
