I am trying out four different ARs in .308 and to me the M&P10 has the most kick/recoil. Significantly more so than the others. Is it just the one I am using or have others found this to be true?

I'm still trying to understand why people think .308 has a lot of kick. Come on, this is a soft shooting cartridge.

It weighs less than your typical DPMS, thus!

But the cheap factory sharp edged factory collapsible stock just killed my shoulder! Fixed that quick!

With the same ammo, any difference in actual recoil is to small to feel. However the felt recoil depends on many factors. These would include ammo differences, weight, muzzle brakes, buffer spring, the surface area of the butt stock, and how much junk is bolted on. There is also a huge difference in the clothing we wear from day to day. On a hot day, having a T-shirt on; and a brisk day, with a field jacket

Also there is perceived recoil, this is based on the memory of your experience with other guns. I've had complaints about recoil in AR-15's in 223. This was compared to the shooters experience, in only have shot 22 LR before hand. Also, attitude at the time of shooting affects our perceptions. (Being hung-over always distorts sensory imputs! But so do other minor things.)

It's a .308....... .308 have a kick when fired. To save ur shoulder stick with a .22!

A 55 grain .223 fired from an 8lb gun has about 3-4 foot pounds of recoil energy. A 165 grain .308 fired from a 7.5 pound gun has about 18 foot pounds of recoil energy. That sounds like significantly more and may be to some that have never shot anything else with more recoil. I love turkey hunting and turkey loads in just a 3'' chambered 12 gauge can produce about 55 foot pounds of recoil energy. So when I shoot my M&P 10 it feels like a cap gun.

None of them recoil enough to really make much difference. You have to get up into the really high capacity big bores before recoil becomes a concern. At least to me and most of the experienced shooters I know. Unless, of course, you have some sort of physical issue you're dealing with.

I have no problem with the 308 recoil.
Granted it is more than a 223.
LimbSaver has some great recoil pads that will definitely ease your pain.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please read the question!!! I am asking if the M&P10 kicks more than other .308 ARs? Not if a .308 has too much kick. Please answer with respect to the M&P10 compared to other .308 caliber ARs.

Thank you,

Larry

The flash suppressor also has muzzle brake qualities to it. So, a .308 AR with, say an A2 flash hider is going to kick more than the M&P10 will.

Recoil & felt recoil are both more noticeable IMO on the stock MP10, likely due to the hard stock and light weight.

I've reduced my recoi by installing collapsible stock with rubberized end, plus muzzle brake. Recoil now pleasant and can shoot all day long.
