Just rescued a lovable mutt from a no-kill shelter. He will most likely become a pet therapy dog making visits to the local VA hospital and Rehab Centers.

The animal shelter thought he is a Beagle mix - I'm not sure about that. if he has Beagle in his lineage, there surely is some large breed involved too. Maybe Lab, Boxer, etc. He is 16 months old, stands 24 inches tall at the shoulder, and weighs about 40 lbs.

Any ideas on his heritage??

Here are a couple of pics:

Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe a little pitbull? Good job on the RESCUE. Believe me...they KNOW you saved them.

My avatar is Wiley a rescue Malamute we had for about ten years. He came from a horrible situation...no doubt we saved his life. He was a loyal, loving companion as soon as he figured out we were not going to hurt or abuse him.

He just died this past November. At least the last ten years of his life were good ones.

i'm going to venture and guess by the size of his head/his ears, and shorter nose.

lab/shar pei mix. just a guess

We have a pound rescue that, with a slight difference in coloration, looks almost identical to your Dog and is about the same size as well, she weighs just under 50 lb's.

After spending two years trying to figure her out I gave up but think she has some sort of bird dog in her, she instinctively comes up on point once in a while, and maybe greyhound due to the fact that she runs like the wind and has a deep chest and thin waist. I kinda ruled out Beagle, or some sort of Hound, simply because while she'll do a lot of sniffing at tracks, she doesn't have the trailing instinct.

I will say this about our Dog, Queenie, she is the smartest Dog we've ever had and we've had at least 100 different Dogs over the years, mostly purebreds. Out of all the Dogs we've had I think she'll beat out Sam, one of the Bloodhounds I used to run, as my favorite, and that's saying a lot.........

I have a thing for mixed breed dogs. Most are smart and make good companions. Your's does look like some lab or boxer mix, but regardless of what, he's a fine looking dog.:)

Depending how badly you want to know, there are several "dog dna analysis" services. For around $60, you can order a kit to have your dog's dna analyzed for breed types. Just google "dog dna analysis"; you'll find several hits.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. I'm just curious - don't need to know $60 worth. I'd rather spend the $$ on ammo. The dog is fun - loves to play in the snow. We have only had him for a few days and he has adjusted to the house very well. He loves attention and hugs - hides from the cat under the kitchen table or behind my chair - knows which rooms are off-limits and has been a real joy so far. I think he will make a good therapy pet. We lost our Golden about a year and a half ago and have been hoping for a dog with the right personality to take over that job. I think we have found him.

I agree that he looks as if he has pit bull in his lineage and in my opinion that is definitely not a bad thing. Your dog is one handsome lad sir.

You sure do have a good looking new best buddy there. The hind legs seem to have a bit of a german shepherd shape. Maybe a little of that in him too.

I'm thinking there's some lab and some Staffordshire ("pit"), hard to tell what else. My guess is it will be a great- albeit strong-willed!- dog.
