I was shopping for some "Dummie rounds" found some Tipton snap caps for my M&P 9 every review I read claimed that dry firing your center fire pistol would cause damage to the firing pin. I was always told dry firing was not harmful as a matter of fact it is essential for practacing trigger control. I dry fire my pistol at least once a day. Are these people full of it?

Thanks,
Matt

We need to do some improvement to your reading habits.

Shooting and dryfiring a quality centerfire pistol is like driving your car. Sure, over time it will wear out, but you bought it to use, right?

Dry firing is a very good thing. It has help me a great deal! A great training aid. For me, it works! Use snap caps...good to go!

Use snap caps or any other dummy round. I severed the roll pin retaining the striker on my Springfield XD .40 not using a dummy. I was able to obtain one from springfield and replaced the pin. The first question the tech asked me if I was using a dummy round while dry firing. Over long periods of time, it will effect the mechanical parts in the gun. I dry fire every day for trigger control, sight alignment and multipull target acquisition. You will inclrease your speed with practice.

Okay, educate me! I just ordered some dummy rounds which appear to be plastic filled, and I assume they will eject okay each time the slide is drawn back?? What is the advantage to snap caps? Are snap caps only good for one firing?

The snap caps have a little give simulating a live primer strike. Use them as many times as you want.

The only snap caps that have a limited life are the ones available for rimfires. They get whacked up prety good with multiple strikes on the plastic rim...to bad because rimfires are the one class of gun which can be quickly damaged by dryfiring on an empty chamber.
