Go for it. If I want to play with rounds I'll put in snap caps, otherwise I usually dry fire without.

Supposed to be ok to dry fire centerfire pistols,according to many.
I still try to use snap caps just to be safe.

Get a laser. It'll clearly show how good your trigger manipulation is by how the dot moves when the trigger breaks.
If you don't want to use it as a sight, get one of those $10 chinese ones off ebay, they work fine for dry firing. If you want one that can withstand the rigors of shooting, you'll have to pay a lot more more.

Dry practice is fine with an M&P. I have at least 50,000 dry presses on my M&P 45 and no issues.
