The other night I was watching 'The Gauntlet', and it got me thinking. Does anyone know what the duty issue load for the Phoenix PD would have been around 1977 ? Just curious what ol' Ben was carrying in his 66.

around that period of time i was a deputy sheriff in yavapai county, just north of phoenix about 100miles, although the county runs down to within about 50 miles of phx. Most agencies i ran into used one of the following,
a Kframe smith, ruger in .357, or the colt. Ammunition was generally 158grain jacketed hollow point. Then the day came when we were called in and told to stop carrying magnum rounds, and issued .38special +p.
A court case went against an agency in california, the story went, and magnum rounds used to plug a bad guy were considered "undue" force.
I got 18rounds of +p ammo. Went out side and put the magnum stuff back in. I would suspect phoenix was using similar stuff. The semiauto's started coming in later. Course now it's all glocks for phx. The exception is the maricopa s.o. which a friend was telling me allowing some deputies to carry other than the standard .40 glock, if they qualified with it. I had a friend at the time on the maricopa s.o. that when the glocks came in carried a model 17. In the glove compartment was a colt delta elite in 10mm, and in the trunk was a .375H&H. In some parts of the town houses were made out of railroad ties, when standard bullets wouldn't penetrate. The rifle was to change attitudes which it did.

the gauntlet

i've seen the movie by the way in the past, and thought is was pretty stupid.
however i have to admit another eastwood film, where he was chasing a indian accross the res. in a jeep and later to new york city is what got me to going on being a deputy sheriff in northern arizona.

you got me to thinking and i thought i would mention one other thing.
there has been a hoohaa going on for some time about phoenix patrol officers being allowing to carry ar15's in the cars. City was blowing backwards on it, and some have been donated. This is a very real thing given the mexican connection, and they are really well armed.
It makes me snicker, cause in the 70's in yavapai county which is like the size of rhode island, sometimes there was only two of us on duty. Parts of the county did not have radio contact. I often carried in the car my model 19, another hideout pistol, a remington 870 sawed off shotgun, and a ar180 with several 30 round clips. I wasn't the only one.
