Early Model 41

Best guess is your M41 probably shipped in the summer of 1958. The closest in my database is #11558 that was shipped in June 1958.
But S&W did not assemble or ship their products in serial number order. It is possible that your M41 could have been shipped as late as 1959.
Beautiful pistol that looks like it just stepped out of a Time Machine! Are there any accessories in the box? It should have been shipped with one magazine, a false muzzle cap, tool kit, and instruction sheet.

I agree, that is a very nice looking pistol and I am not a fan of the longer barrels. Even the box looks brand new. Amazing! I am always surprised at how many people toss or lose the boxes for their firearms. Original boxes numbered to a specific firearm can add quite a bit to the value of firearm down the road. This one is proof of that.

Thanks for your response. Mine has an extra magazine, instruction sheet and warranty card with correct serial number.
It came out of an estate sale. I'm mainly a collector I don't shoot much anymore. I would rate the condition at 98%. It looks better in person than in pictures.

I have a 58-59 model 41 7 3/8" barrel with the compensator w/ factory box, my box doesn't look as good as your box.

Another model 41 owner told me, shooting with the compensator will lead up and cause finish damage to the compensator.
I took his word and ordered an end piece that replaces the compensator. I take the compensator off when I shoot the model 41, and install the barrel end piece, just to be safe.

I have a piggyback question on the 41 I just bought a few days ago at an LGS, SN 176XX, which I believe is a 1959 SN. I am a revolver guy and knew absolutely nothing about the 41's except their reputation for accuracy and the beautiful finish on the older ones. It was an impulse buy and I think I paid too much ($1,099, no box, 1 mag) but it is about 95% or better by my estimate and I couldn't pass it up. I was shocked to see the price of original metal follower mags and looking at the threads I see varying opinions on how well the new ones will work but I will probably try one from Midway or Numrich and see what happens. Thanks for any advice you can share on my purchase... I'm a tech dinosaur at almost 80 and haven't figured out how to post photos yet. Would like to buy a few of the original mags if anyone has them for sale (gulp!). Jon
