I have shot trap with electronic hearing protection for about 5 years now, currently use it all the time.
It's great until you hear someone on down the line fart and you start laughing out loud and loose all concentration!
(sometimes you hear things you wish you hadn't)
I use Peltors and have had good success.

I have Peltor's Tactical muffs. Expensive but they have lasted me 6 years with no problems.

I wear them as soon as drive into my outdoor range. Last week I got of my car at the range and a guy was shooting his Weatherby 460 about 20' away...Kaboom!

oldfella,

I just got [on Tuesday] some Pro Ears Gold e-muffs but I have not had a chance to 'range test' them yet. For amusement, I donned the muffs, turned up the volume, and then dropped some 2x4's on the basement floor: the noise is very muted yet I could hear (very clearly) the missus asking me 'what was going on down there?'.

FWIW, OpticsPlanet.com has them on sale and shipping was free.

E-muff range report to follow.

Hey, Chris - After three days of research I've decide (ordered from Optics Planet) to go with the Pro-Ears gold, as you. Thanks every one.

Good choice on the pro ears. I've had mine for 3 years. Recently I broke the head piece by stretching it too far. My Fault. I contacted Pro Ears and they sent a new head band for free and payed for the UPS too. Great product and great people.

I think thats a good idea. I like to shoot alone at our range and I want to hear any approching vehicles or persons and my electronic muffs allow me to do that.

You won't regret the Pro Ears, as the only disadvantage they have is cost.
They are about the fastest acting available, which is very important to protect from impulse noise and also let you hear small sounds.
I chose them because of spending so much time as a Safety Officer and Instructor on the range. I bought extra pairs to put on problem students so I could talk to them in a normal voice and be understood.

The video demo is really dramatic! I'd never given much thought to the electronic muffs until seeing this. The Pro Ears seem like they'd be especially effective for instruction. Gotta rethink this...

Geez...More $$. Does it ever stop! :)

I've been using a Walker's GameEar model for some years,
and am very happy. Just have to remember that Right is Red.
Put them on backwards, and you're always looking in the opposite
direction from the noise source. Amplifies small sounds I'd have
otherwise missed, due to deteriorating hearing. (Wonder what happened
there??) TACC1
