The recent trend of not getting .22LR is frustrating. So I dug a hole in my wallet and bought a boutique brand. I was goofing off a little bit and gotta say, it runs clean and reliable so far. But it's on the more expensive site...

It's made in the UK and used for competition shooting.

If you shoot competition or want to do some serious accuracy testing, you might want to consider it.

Eley is not a boutique brand of ammo...

in the world of smallbore Olympic shooting it dominates. It is certainly NOT cheap....but it is used by Medal winners around the world because it performs with phenominal consistency and accuracy.

Eley Tenex is the flagship of their line up. they have a number of lesser grades as well.

Since 90% of rimfire shooting is at paper I have become addicted to the high quality imported stuff. When you start seeing .5" groups at 50 yds it's hard to go back to the cheaper stuff.

MSRP ranges from $8.00 (Target) to $26.95 (Tennex) for a box of 50. So just for plinking in the backyard it's too expensive for me. But I'm not a competition shooter...

Indeed.... not a plinker round, but a very expensive and scary accurate cartridge.

But it is SO gratifying when you put 5 rounds into a hole the size of a .25 caliber at 50 meters or 10 rounds into a .38 sized hole at 100 meters.

Too bad the only REAL competitor to Tenex that was made in the USA was the Federal UM-1 that was patterned after the Russian Olymp.

At one time Winchester ( MK 3/4) had a round that could stay with Tenex as did Remington (6600 Match).

There several other manufacturers that will compete with Tenex...Lapua makes several lines as does RWS and Fioochi...but for most of us when it REALLY counts the Tenex comes out and wins!!

In the 70's I bought a new Anschtutz 54 sporter for a mere 330.00 big money in those days. With that rifle and Eley Tenex many gray squirrels met their demise. Precision shooting at it's best.

Yeah, if you think that Eley Edge ammo is expensive, I think that is the entry level Eley ammo and there are 10 or so in the line.

This is in the line that I see at $20 / 50 rounds in some stores. They tend to keep it on the shelf for a while.

At that price I'll shoot my .45.

RWS R-50 was the German made ammo that was in line with Eley red box when I shot at Camp Perry 1988 to 2000. Larry

I shoot Eley Match black box in my 40X and M12. Rumor has it that the Match is Tenex that doesn't quite meet the accuracy standards.

It's good for sub-0.25" groups off the bench at 50 yards with iron sights. Wish I could shoot as well as the ammo. I can't really tell the difference when compared to Tenex and it's a couple of bucks cheaper per box.

Every Tenex bullet is visually inspected before loading. Those that don't pass inspection are separated and used in less expensive ammo.

We're seeing a lot of (relatively) inexpensive "Aguila" 22LR ammunition showing up around here. On the box, it says that is an Eley company. A little digging found that it is manufacturing in Mexico and distributed in the U.S. exclusively by Texas Armament and Technology (TxAT).

Aquila is primed by Eley, but I do not think that Eley owns them....they are a Mexican company.

Their Match Extra shoots very well My Reminton 541T and my Anschutz 54.18 MS..at 100 meters I can get 10 shot strings into .85 /1.00 in a no wind condition.

Certainly good enough for any Rams in the Silhouette game!!

Years back there was some really cheap Yugoslavian .22 ammo available. Of course back then ALL .22 ammo was readily available and I purchased by the case. I was heavily involved in competitive bullseye shooting then and I wanted the best (most accurate) ammo I could find. I compared 5 different .22 brands, Eley included. Eley was the most expensive and the Yugoslavian stuff the cheapest. The worst grouping I got was from the Eley (and it smelled funny). The cheap stuff worked the best putting all the shots in the x-ring almost in the same hole. The downside of that ammo was it tended to gunk up the gun from the sticky lube they used. Of course, now I shoot whatever I can get with varying results.

We're seeing a lot of (relatively) inexpensive "Aguila" 22LR ammunition showing up around here.

I loaded up on Aguila (Spanish for Eagle) back in the late '90s and early '00s when I was doing a lot of Boy Scout merit badge work. It is quality stuff. I only have about 20 bricks left. The 22 shortage hasn't affected me or my grandchildren, but I would dearly love to see it for sale here, again.

For fathers day my son got me 10 boxes of Eley target, then apoligized because it wasn't Winchester , Remington or some other brand of American made ammo. When I explained that Eley was the top brand and I had never bought a box in the past because local stores never stocked the "good" stuff, he was happy. He's such a good boy! Now I'm hoarding them because I may never get any more. I will have to shoot at least one box, just for the experience.

Well, then I should stock them... I guess.

Thanks for sharing your experience with that brand.

I shoot the Eley ammo sometimes and have noticed the ammo has a slipperly lube on the bullets it gets on your finger when loading mags.
