CANTON -- Jethro, the Canton Police K9 officer who was shot during a burglary Saturday has passed away, police confirm.
Jethro was shot when officers responded to Fisher Food mart for a burglary alarm activation.
Inside, Jethro was shot by the suspect. He was taken to Stark County Veterinary Emergency Clinic for treatment.
Police say Jethro was shot three times, but none of the rounds struck vital organs and did not require surgery. However, the shooting caused some brain trauma.
According to the Police K9 Association, Jethro had trouble resting through the night and had to be sedated. He died Sunday morning.
Police later found the suspect in a nearby yard. The suspect sustained a gunshot wound during police fire. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
