A buddy emailed me a flyer for an estate sale over in the next county that he thought I might find of interest. It listed some tractor implements that are the size I use on my Kubota tractor, some other farm equipment and tools, and "a few guns".
I made the trip over to the next county, found the location and was early enough to take a quick walk thru to check out the tractor equipment and tools. I actually saw a few tools that interested me, then found the table with the firearms. As I quickly glanced down the table I saw an assortment of hunting rifles and shotguns, maybe a dozen in all. Didn't see any handguns. At the end was a brown box that caught my eye because it looked similar to the several boxes I've received from the CMP with various rifles I'd ordered some years back. When I flipped open the lid I discovered it was indeed a box from the CMP with a cosmoline covered rifle inside of brown paper wrap. Closer look revealed a Remington M1903. Hmmm, I have have to see how the bidding looks on this one.
When the auction started I ended up not bidding on any of the farm implements or tools. That M1903 had peaked my interest, but I didn't want to seem too interested in it. I was beginning to get a bit anxious as the auction progressed because the items I would have bid on were being aggressively pursued and final bids seemed a bit high to me. When it came time for the guns, I was seeing the same aggressive bidding. One well used Remington 870 Wingmaster in 12 guage went for $595,which I thought was high.
Last of the firearms to bid was the grease covered "M1903 army rifle". Opening bid was $150.00. I hesitated a few seconds to see who the competitors might be, then raised my hand and said "$160". No one else bid. All I can figure is that the thick covering of cosmoline was more than most wanted to deal with.
Well, at least I'll have a fun evening project to work on in my spare time the next week or so. Here are a few quick cell phone pictures. Once I get it cleaned up I'll post some "after" pictures.
