Earlier this week my wife and made a trip to Wichita which is about 70 miles north of us. She has been wanting some new binoculars and I have been eyeing a rangefinder. We had looked at the Vortex combo set both at the Cabela's in KC and on-line and decided to take the trip and buy in person, and of course hit several gun shops along the way.

When we got there I asked for the combo of the Vortex 1300 Rangefinder and the Crossfire 10x42 binoculars. Of course, they were out of them, plenty of each but not in the combo pack. And apparently the special is over as well as it was taken down from their web site. So they said, we will sell you each of them for the combo price of $350. I said great, we kept looking around and my wife noticed an upgrade pair of binoculars, Vortex Diamondbacks, which she really liked but would have made the package $120 more even with the individual binocular sale price. They must have felt sorry for me since I drove there just to make this purchase as I ended up with the Vortex 1300 rangefinder and the Diamondback 10x42's for the same combo price of $350, saving the $120. When one of the guys offered me the deal, I thought he was just kidding, but no, the manager honored it and rang it up for us and was just as helpful.

I often see the bad service rants and rip offs so I wanted to share a positive one.

Just the other day -
There it was- a box of 380. Herters, 50 Rounds.
$20.99!
After the put on the Tax and took off my Military Discount and My Member Account Balance-
Walked with a charge of- $16.55.
Why did I only get one Box?
That’s all they had left!

Cabelas once gave me a new 1911 for the price of an identical used one. They knocked $600 off the price. Long story. I got many other great deals from them

I think you will like the Vortex, excellent products with an outstanding no-fault warranty. I do have a pair of Diamondback binoculars and they can't be beat for the price in my opinion. My daughter had a pair of their binoculars, young niece was visiting and managed to drop them 10' to a brick patio destroying them. She contacted Vortex, send in the damaged ones and a new pair arrived in days, can't beat that! I did work at Cabela's for 9 years in the Gun Library pre-Bass Pro as a hobby job after retirement, (slipping on my Nomex undergarments now), and while it is certainly not the same as when they stood alone I am happy to hear they treated you well.

Cabelas is a strange place. I've had some truly terrible service there balanced out by some truly insane deals and some of the most helpful people. Never will I have a gun purchasing experience there be average, I'm either paying $300 for a nice .357 K frame or $180 for 590A1 with ghost rings and bayonet lug, or being hassled about how badly I certainly want to drop $700 on a poor condition model 10 or staring at a $1200 Yugo SKS. Just nothing in between.

I still stop in Cabelas, and every now and then I run into a great deal. It's less common than it used to be, but it still happens. I do sorely miss cabelas store brand gear, it's been trash without a warranty after bass pro took over. I've got a six year old pair of heavy duty goretex winter gloves I heavily abuse every winter climbling, snowshoeing, fishing, and hunting. They've shown no signs of letting up. Ditto an excellent fur hat from them, I've sewn up one rip but beyond that it keeps on ticking despite being an everyday use item during the winter. I also almost exclusively used to use their wool socks, but lately they've gone terribly downhill in quality.

I love going there........

I bought a set of 6X night binos at the store hsguy worked at, I have bought at our stores here and Washington, good service and good prices, last big buy was a handheld gps and card for fsr areas and lake placement maps for BC and Alberta.
And one other thing, da fudge is to die for, and mom doesn't give a rats patoot what I buy as long as I remember da fudge.

Cabela’s

I agree with some earlier posts—Cabela’s pre-Bass Pro line of clothes were great. I bought a hooded medium weight jacket a few years ago . It was
marked $49.99, rang up around $25, and lasted for years. It never did wear out, just got so dirty and oil stained I can’t wear it in public.

I love Cabelas. The trick is to only look at the price tags first, then look to see if the gun is any good. Laugh at the $900 refinished Model 10s, but be ready when there is something good.

They later called me and said they screwed up the paperwork, asked if I could come back in with the gun. No problem paperwork was done correctly the gun counter mgr. gave me a $100 gift card for my troubles. winner / winner

With my experiences with Cabelas, I half expected your posting to say that Cabelas had made a mistake on the gun's price wanted you to bring it back so they could charge you more!
