There is an S&W 1917 [Brazilian 1937 contract] which I would like to use with 45 Auto Rim cases, not moon clips. But it has an endearing quirk, where one or two fired cases get bypassed by the extractor. Not cool.

The R-P brass I have is about .513 rim diameter, someone checked his Starline 45 AR brass, and it too averages .513 - this suggests no holy joy in changing brass makes.

This revolver is chambered for the 45 ACP, sticking a 45 Colt in results in a positive stop at the same depth. The extractor is flush with the rear of the cylinder [not cut for a rim].

All cases fit just so. But when you get them about 1/3d out, the fired cases tip in the extractor, sometimes enough to slip off the extractor and back down into the chamber.

It sure looks like 45 ACP and moon clips are in my future.

FWIW, HKS 25-M speedloaders will NOT work, the center of the extractor hits the pin under the 25-M and keeps the speedloader from getting close enough where the AR cases actually enter the chambers before twisting the knob...

The proper way to extract/eject spent cartridges from a revolver is to point the muzzle skyward, then push the ejector rod.

Proper or not, it does work ;) About 3 or four fall out before pushing the plunger.

Still no joy with an HKS speedloader. :(

I have had other Smiths do the same thing, and none of them are chambered in .45. Not only that, but they are bone stock. For me it tends to happen with .38s or .357s.

All DAs do that in a horizontal position because you allow gravity to work on the empty cases. Just let all the cases fall free before returning the ext or use the vertical dump.

With extractor star fully extended, does it have side play?

I might be missing something her, no surprise :rolleyes:but I think 45 auto rim might work- if you reload. Finding a box of factory I expect would be a bit difficult these days. Just a thought. :)

I have always found the moon clips to be very convenient and practical, and much easier to pick up a bundle of 6 cases than 6 individual cases. If you use one of the several types of loaders/unloaders the moon clips are no different than using magazines in a semi-auto. If you are into speed shooting, then use round nose bullets, other wise the H&G 68 200 gr SWC is a superbly accurate bullet.
