The 460 S&W Magnum has been in production since 2005 and a number of models have been finished in black. Most are distributor specials, a few are Performance Center, and a few prototypes are known.

I will start will the four distributor specials, all of which were limited runs.

There are 3 different prototype guns I am aware of.
The first I will refer to as the black ES. According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, page 291 approximately 16 of these are thought to have been produced. They started life as SKU 163460, the standard 8.375” model and were converted.

The second was a Night Guard version. A single gun was produced from a SKU 150152 pulled from stock. The gun was used at the Vegas Shoot Show and another event in New Orleans to gage the interest from dealers. The gun was sold through the employee purchase program.

The third is a 2 3/4” barrel length gun resembling the ES model, with 460 PD market on the side place. It is believed to be a precursor to what would become the Emergency Kit Gun. It came in a kit very similar to the ES Kit that was released late in 2006 and found in 2007 catalog. The kit is identical in configuration to the one used in the marketing literature provide to the gun writing community with the exception it is marked PD on the lid in place of ES. As an aside I have yet to see an ES kit matching the marketing photos for the ES.

There are about 16 of these in some configuration, 2 of which were shipped to Lew Horton.

The SKU 663460 gives a clue as to it's original configuration as a 163460 then pulled, modified and sold as not new - the first 6 in your SKU.

I have been told they were coated with a product they referred to as black magic (used on several revolvers during this time period).

Yours was formerly in Trotter Collection (but you probably knew that).

Nice Gun
