Factory-engraved Colt Detective Special

I stumbled upon this Colt by chance at one of our local auctions and, although I placed a low bid, I unexpectedly won it. According to the auction description and the information on the box, it is factory-engraved. Is a factory engraving generally the result of a customer order, or did Colt also produce such pieces on their own?

It was more than likely a special order...either from an individual or possibly a distributor. The best way to tell is to order an archives letter...it will tell you where the revolver went and how many similar examples might have been shipped with it.
