I recall several times during past criminal investigations calling Colt, Ruger, etc. Asking for history department and inquiring about a firearms date of production, shipment to first buyer or retailer.

I believe Ruger was my last call before retiring and I was able to obtain the neccessary info. Sometimes you have to go forward from the scource instead of back.

Does S&W still have this as part of their factory service? No sign of this on web site.

S&W has a historian. The information your asking for is available to us by purchasing a letter with the documented history of a model and serial number. However, I expect that the info you want would be available to a law enforcement agency without purchasing a letter. Mr. Roy Jinks is the historian. You can request a form, fill in the info and mail it to him at S&W. Richard

Roy Jinks routinely works with Law enforcement, ATF, etc. on older guns. Newer guns, triple alpha numbers(ABC1234, etc.), are in the S&W computer and anybody there can look up shipping info. I have never seen it mentioned that these folks need any paperwork done to get information.
