I own a Nickel plated 19-4 snub nose and its in great shape. Definitely signs of use and carry, but not worn, gouged, or any slight signs of abuse. In 36 years the gun still looks brand new to the not so close eye, but upon closer inspection, there are scratches. Is it possible to send the revolver back to Smith and Wesson to redo the finish?

Would that increase the value or decrease it as it was redone? You mind posting some before and after photos?

I'd also like them to inspect it and clean it up internally. I want to take care of this gun and keep it true for future generations

I've polished it already and it made a world of difference. I'll take some detailed photos. I also have some magna stocks coming in for it in the next week or so. I was just wondering what they would charge to do it. $250 isn't bad.

Man,don't spend that money on a re-finish. That gun looks great! Can you feel any of the "scratches" with a fingernail? If not,KEEP POLISHING! They will come out. And it WILL decrease the value somewhat if you do a re-finish,even one done at the factory. ORIGINALITY is what determines value.

How deep is the original finish? I'll take some photos of what I'm talking about. I want to know if its of normal finish from factory.

Re-Nickel or Not???

I guess that I am in the same camp as many of the others that have posted, a nickel revolver would have to be in pretty sad shape, finish wise, before I would consider a re-nickel. Mother's does a great job in reviving a nickel finish. Hope that when you remove those Pac's, that you don't have a "ghost" of the grips in the finish. I have a 19-3 nickel revolver that had lasergrips installed, and they left a grey or blackened image of the grips in the nickel finish! Original Magna's will look great on your pistol! Good Luck with your decision! I think Mother's is the right choice in finish protection! As a side note, Keep Mother's away from the Trigger and Hammer! Mother's will remove the case coloring finish! They need to stay colorful and bright!

What would you hope to achieve with a re-finish? The gun looks great with the polishing you have already applied. Guns need to be used, not mounted in a shadow-box on the wall to be looked at. Go out and shoot the heck out of it.

Well, to make it look better of course. It's got some scratched you can feel with a finger nail. As I said earlier, I'll have to make a couple more photos of it closer. It looks near Mint in the photos I have, but under closer inspection it needs some touch up. I'm just a perfectionist and I like things to look new. I guess that's my sort of OCD. Except its not what most people think of OCD.

If you refinish it there's no reason to keep it for future generations. A refinished gun typically doesn't have the value of an original finish.

If I get a whiff of a sign a gun's been refinished, I'll look right past it to admire a worn original if I'm looking at a number of classic Smith & Wesson or Colt revolvers in a gun shop case or on a gun show table.

There are a couple spots here and right I'm front of the ejector looks like the metal wasn't finished. It has a wood grain look.

This picture was hard to take. My phone wants to focus on the reflection instead of the mars.

It pretty much the same on the other side. Maybe I'm being to anal haha.

I don't think I see anything that can't be polished out except the "wrinkle" in front of the ejector rod housing. That is,imo,a mfg defect that I have seen on quite a few nickel guns over the years. Anyhow, you come across,to me at least, not so much as anal, but as a guy who wants what he wants. Have at it! :)

Trust me. The camera isn't good enough to show everything. Haha. I'll leave it be. I was just throwing that out there. I do have a set of Magnas coming for it.

I find the camera usually shows MORE than I'd like to see. Close ups usually make things look worse than they really are.
