My recently purchased model 681 (no dash) has the rubber Hogue grip installed. Wondering if these were originally issued with the rubber grip or maybe the Magna service stocks. I actually like magnas (with T-Grip) and would consider looking for a pair if they were originally provided.

thanks,

Agree with Gun 4 Fun. Magna stocks were factory. I took the magna's off of my slightly used 581 and put a Hogue on. I to like the magna/T-grip set up (have it for my model 15 and a model 60), but the original 581 stocks were in very nice shape and I wanted keep them that way.

NICE gunporn, Ladder 13!

The S&W 581/681-series revolvers were the best service revolver ever made, in my deeply-prejudiced opinion. Perhaps the single-best service sideiron, period. A full-strength/full-potential 357 Magnum platform capable of firing REAL 357 ammo full-time, sights that stay adjusted, and the near-perfect barrel length for all-around usage by LEOs and citizens alike. (OK, a 5-inch is pretty good, too). A 686 x 4" is my most-used CCW and a constant back-country companion.

Thanks, guys. Soon I will get it dressed properly. I had these target stocks in my parts box and stuck them on for the picture, but they don't look "right" on this gun and I don't like the shape of them anyhow.
I notice that Ladder 13's have the rounded bottoms. Any idea when S&W changed to that style from the flat-bottomed stocks?

The above stocks were factory to, all LE gun's had that type of stock and they were like $15 dollars extra.

They actually didn't switch. Most LEO guns that came with magnas stocks, came with what is know as PC (for plain clothes) magna stocks like those on ladder13's beauty. I think that the targets look better, even on a 581/681. They balance out the gun nicely, and since I have large hands, K frame magnas don't fit me worth a hoot.

I will have to respectfully disagree with you sir, those grips look great on your gun.

The rounded bottom or PC stocks were first made in the 1950s, and it seems to have been random as to whether a particular K/L frame gun had these or the standard flat-bottomed ones from the factory. Probably just a function as to which ones were in stock when the guns were assembled.
