We drove to Fairbanks for a few days in the big city. The international ice carving festival was in progress. Ice sculptors come from all over the world to compete. The two main categories are single ice block and multi ice block. Some of the sculptures were over 20 feet high.
It was minus 14 degrees so the ice is safe for a while. Here are a few samples of the extraordinary work.
Kim at the entrance.
Winner of the realistic category single block competition. The artist is Japanese and the single block sculpture was about seven feet tall. The detail is incredible. The fish in the bird's beak even had scales. Notice the water droplets.
A single block sculpture about ten feet tall.
Winner of the multi-block realistic category. It was created by the same sculptor that won the single block competition. White Fang was the title of this sculpture.
Detail of the wolves.
Detail of the caribou. He's probably about ten feet to the tip of the antler.
King Kong complete with a couple of airplanes.
