If you know the name William "Wild Bill" Guarnere the a hero made famous by the best-selling book Band of Brothers and the HBO miniseries of the same name, you will find this story interesting.

Bill and Edward Heffron remained lifelong friends after returning home. Guarnere was Heffron's best man at the latter's wedding in 1954. He was also godfather of Heffron's daughter Patricia.

Two members of The Greatest Generation and proud Philadelphians.

The actor who played him in "Band Of Brothers"--was that Hughes?--was excellent. But then nearly every one of them, many of them Brits like the kid who played Doc Roe and nailed the accent, was very good. Is Winters still alive?

Winters died Jan. 2, 2011.

I have been watching the series again on Amazon Prime. I am getting more out of it this time around. I was touched by it the first time. Maybe it is that I am older and my father and Uncles who fought in the war have passed. I miss them. Somewhere I have the Ambrose book. I might revisit that. One of the nice things about being retired is that you now have time to do these things.

Here is a recording of Ed "Babe" Heffron in a tribute to Maj.Dick Winters. The second one is Bill Guarnere speaking. He even holds an M1 Garand for a few seconds and talks about the rifle, his favorite. If you are interested there are numerous videos and tributes to these men on YouTube. God bless them all.
