Thanks for posting this thread, as I didn't know he passed a few days ago. He was one of my favorite authors also. His love for the sea and for vintage autos and aircraft came through in his novels. I think the first book of his I read was "Raise the Titanic" back in the 70's.

Raise the Titanic is certainly an interesting novel now now that we know this is virtually impossible!

Dirk Pitt and his crew have taken me along on many an adventure. One of Cussler's books, SAHARA, was made into a move with Matthew McConnehey (SP) It may not be up to the mark 100% but it is a very good movie. Check it out.

I watched the movie, but didn't get to read the book.

Funny you should say that. Clive Cussler himself wasn't of the same opinion. The way they butchered the screenplay ticked Cussler off royally and after that movie he refused to sell movie rights to any more of his works.

As for the movie; it was OK, but I think if they had followed the book better I think it would have been a much better movie.

I always enjoyed the way he wrote himself into many of his books in a "bit part." Guess I have about thirty or so. They were always a good read, and I knew about his interest in collector cars. He wrote that into his books as well.

This is sad news. While I am pretty behind in reading all of his novels, his popularity always amazed me. Everyone from my grandparents to my friends in high school seemed to love reading his works. I always loved looking at the back of the dust jackets to see which of his classic cars was featured. I never understood why Dirk Pitt was an Air Force officer when most of the adventures where naval, but either way they are classic adventure stories.

The New York Times has a detailed obituary about him: Clive Cussler, Best-Selling Author and Adventurer, Is Dead at 88 - The New York Times

I always bought the hard cover books as I couldn't wait till they came out in paperback. Many long hours I've spent reading just about any book he wrote. RIP Clive. Frank

He will be missed. One thing about him, that many don't know, is that he was involved in several searches and finds of sunken ships as well as other treasures. It appears that his books are not only entertaining but mimic his real life to an extent.
