Some locals here have put together a fast draw group. I went and visited and it looks like fun. A timer activates a light, you draw, fire and the impact of the round trips a timer giving you your "score."

Before anyone gets too concerned the "ammunition" is a wax bullet propelled by a shotgun primer fitted into a special case.

Anyone else do this? How about some advice on pistols, seems most of these guys are using Ruger Vaqueros but I really like the look of the Italian Colt copies, they seem to be a little closer to the original Colts.

Back when I had my gunshop open in Florence, it was right next to the Arizona Ranger's station.
They used to do that competition all the time.

It's a ton of fun, you should try it. Most of those guys are real friendly and will let you try it with their guns and leather before you shell out a dime. They will give you plenty of advice too. Most of their guns are so heavily modified it doesn't matter what you choose at it won't be anything close when your done. That doesn't mean you can't use a stock revolver, but you will want to shed as much weight as you can.

They also have their own websites and forums. Google " World Fast Draw Association " to get you started.

Not sure who is the top dog today, but I saw Bob Munden fire 2 shots that sounded like one, and it was so fast if you blinked you missed it. Never saw his hand move, just the sound of the gun firing. Unreal.

How bad does it hurt when you shoot yourself in the foot with a wax bullet?

I don't know, but when I shot cats with it at about 20 yards, they moved out right smartly. This was with a 30-06 and a rifle primer, but I don't think it got as much velocity as a shorter pistol barrel; more bore friction.
